And you are being an epitome of humility when you talk of your supposed shortcomings. And yes, you are right - my assumption was it is the di/dt that does the trick (like battery test), not the absolute i or power - the subject of driver Q and amplifier Damping Factor. No, let me not start another one of those! ![]()

a TL made by Bud Fried (any one, all of Irv's designs were fantastic). a Horn made by Paul Klipsch (anyone pre 1980 before this son took over) a Sealed box made by Vilchur and Kloss (sold under the AR brand - from the 50s and 60s) and so on... each of these speakers epitomised a certain philiosophy the tuneful-ness of the TL, the Slam of the Horn and the tightness of the Acoustic suspension. BTW 30 min with any of these guys > all the audio books ever written. Each of these speakers could produce the a reference SPL (say 90db at 50Hz) but each of them sounded very different (at that reference SPL). That is what I refer to as Quality of Sound/Bass. The same applies to woofers in general. Xmax along with Sd only tells you how much air was moved not how it was moved. LBM, did you see the BL on that Pio woofer? B&T/Der Alte, Xmax does NOT determine how much power a woofer can take but is does determie when the woofer wil reach it's physical limits. That limit might be before or after it's thermal power rating depending on the design of the woofer and it's loading. In ported boxes the Xmax is often reached before thermal limits are reached, sealed boxes are less prone to this malady and horns dont refer to Xmax limitations as the bass system is so efficient. I did an IP check and Der Alte and me are using very different IPs. His posts might have the same "feel" as he is from the same generation.

- ''Do all SQ subs have low xmax, and do all SPL subs have high xmax?'' - And, '' Can a sub with a high xmax (and so high SPL tendencies) be considered an SQ sub?''

| i guess i had put up the question in a wrong wrong way.hydrashok i only wanted to know that supposin i am looking for a SPL sub then shouldnt i consider the XMAX factor also, bcoz the greater the xmax greater the output(loudness). it is not nessary for an SQ sub to have more xmax. The xmax is not a factor with which you can decide that a woofer is a SPL or SQ. One has to check for the whole package... Who say that a SQ sub does not need more xmax check out the specs of IDMAX, JL Audio W7, RE XXX, Brahama... Last edited by low_bass_makker : 17th August 2007 at 14:04. | |

| Senior - BHPian | Sir Ji are you challenging your own question... Is IDMAX, RE XXX a SQ sub or a SQL sub.. What you posted in the last post it means that it is a SQ sub which can do SQL or it is a SQL sub which can do SQ. ![]() And I am again says like I said before...XMAX is not a criteria to judge that a woofer is a SQ, SQL, or SPL. There are lots of other factors involved... |
