Should I buy ICE System from Car Dealer? - Team-BHP

Hello All,

I am an newbie and have following team bhp for a week now. Here is my question for the TBHP gurus.

Is it a good idea to buy ICE System from Car Dealer. I enquired about ICE system with Pratham Motors in Bangalore. They have Sony, Pioneer, JBL and Blaupunkt. I enquired for Sony XPlod head unit ( with CD, FM, iPod), one pair JBL component speakers and one pair JBL co-axial speakers. They are charing 15.5K for this with no fitting charges.

What are your thoughts on this? Are there any caveats?

As long as you get everything that you want for ICE from the dealer its fine, no issues. Usually they are slightly on the expensive side & also have less variety to choose from.

Why do you want it from the dealer? If he is saying that the warranty will be void if you get installed from somewhere else, then he is lying. The warranty remains as long as none of the wires are cut. Any decent installer would not cut wires, just install using couplers.

Also, you will get better variety outside at much lower rates. And I guess the quality of the install will be better.

PS: Dealer saying the install is free is pure crap. He has the cost covered in his overall quote.

Edit: Read around the forum. There are better head units than Sony available at the same prices

ICE is really costly to fit from the car dealer. There will be limited choice of add ons.... They mostly provide with standard add ons. If you can find reliable ICE dealers (mostly there are specialists in major metros) go to them you will find varieties with them at reasonable price.

But if you cant find trusted dealers fit the system and basic speakers with the dealers. it would be trusted for original.

The only reason I enquired with car dealer is I work very close to dealers office. ( infact just behind. We share the same compound).

How about the price? Do you think 15.5K for the one I mentioned is good to go or very high?

PS: Though I am enquiring, I am planning to shop around this weekend at AutoFusion and SoundFactor.

does not matter where or who does the install, stay with your car the whole time.

Have heard enough stories of wires cut by installer both at the dealer and other setups.

Its your car and she depends on you to take care of her.

I wont Recommend Car Dealers as they over charge and do a very shabby work.

Hi. It is difficult to comment since the model no's have not been mentioned.
There are 2 ranges and different sizes of speakers by JBL in India - GT5 and GTO series.

@asankarrao, there is a perception that sony HUs are not good. I am not sure since I have not used sony.

You will get pio *050 series with iPod support, usb cable, etc at 4-6K. Speakers - as already posted, it depends on the models you will get. You should search this forum for details on ice options available.

For a start, search on thread titles with word pioneer in them, most give latest prices of pio *050 series. (3050, 4050, 5050 and 6050).

I got mine - pio 4050 with blau in front and pio speakers in rear hatch for 10+; now, the same set up would be around 8.5 to 9.5 K.

The point in going with ICE from the dealer shop is - you will not be shown pios, blaus, JVCs, alpines, etc.

I do recommend that you get security set up done from the dealer before delivery.

I'd put my money on a Blaupunkt head unit for its sound quality over Sony or Pioneer at that price! But thats just me..
As far as speakers are concerned, listen to various options and see what suites your taste!
