Default Sony WX-VX55S - Worth it?

Looking for a Decent sounding Double Din for < Rs. 20K that has the following:

1) iPhone/ iPod jack or atleast Aux jack

2) Double Din (Got an Optra, need to cover the gap)

3) Reliable/ Official warrantied support

4) Screen that can play movies (I'd prefer DVDs but don't have much choice here)

The Sony makes sense and is cheap. Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Sony? It is cheap, but doesn't make sense - it neither has sound quality nor component quality (you will REALLY need warranty & service for Sony).

There are JVC (814, 900 etc.) and Pioneer units, but are at least 10K above your budget.

iPhone / iPod / AUx jack? Check the manual first.

A more economical alternative is a JVC single DIN DVD unit, with a screen that replaces the pull-down sunshade above the windscreen (passenger-side).

Default Thanks!

Thanks but do you dislike Sony as a brand or do you have experience with that specific model?

Any clue what the next cheapest Double Din Player unit is (Model #)?

Thanks again!

There is no dislike - we don't look down upon any brand, big or small. There is enough accumulated experience in TBHP, and most here concur that ICE is not an area that Sony is good at.

There are a couple of threads in the Products section which have the model numbers and prices mentioned. JVC 814 is about 27-30K, I think.

BTW, the model you have mentioned (Sony WX-VX55S) is a single DIN HU that plays VCDs and costs about 13K. I don't remember the model, but JVC's single DIN DVD unit would be more appropriate at that price. Just needs an external screen. The gap can be covered by a dash kit for Optra.

WX-VX55S : CD Receiver : In-Car Entertainment : Sony India

Here ya go!

It's a double din and the 12K price is listed on there.

I'm curious why an Aux in won't allow an MP3 player like the ipod to prove useful. Either way, looks like I'll have to splurge for the screen or a more expensive larger unit :(

It is a double din without the in dash LCD screen. And it is just a simple VCD player occupying a lot of space. Not really worth it. A single din vcd plus a 7" screen would work out within this cost.

Frankly speaking it looks VFM to me if you are not too much SQ inclined

Read here Sony Double Din (New ICE products for 2008)

I have heard some latest high end Sony HUs & they are decent for a normal 4 speaker no sub\amp setup

Unless you are hellbent on filling up that gap in the dash, you dont seriously need double din that only does as much as a single din. And it looks way too GAWDY(IMO), to say the least.

Yes & I believe Sony has targeted only those who wish to put a Double Din HU for a Double Din slot but don't want to go for the expensive ones.

I still feel the JVC GigaMP3 unit would be a better bet than the Sony one. You will be able to have your cake (DVD) and eat it too! Even that unit is about 12K, I think.

And failure rate of JVC drives (Panasonic mechanism) are way less than the Sony drives - just look at the number of "LED replaced on Sony HU" complaints on TBHP.

Just our 2 bits, choice is yours at the end of the day.

Hmmm...Anyone got a link to a picture/ review of the JVC unit? I'd get one in a heartbeat if it'll work with my needs.

Backup camera compatible?

Check here. Then check with your local dealers for availability.

That is a screen function - you need to check the screen specs / manual! The player-only HU will not support switching of video sources.
