Some Pio HU's had ( do they still have?) dot matrix OEL displays with screensavers of swimming dolphins.

Guys, I have seen that. My friend bought one in 2001. My question was,

Did you get the HU with the dolphins as suggested by LBM ?
Which set is that ?

Sorry if I was not clear.

Default D A C & A D C

If it had been about ADC, then I would have taken one with a higher bit rating.

But the question for the guru's is : Where is DAC used in the HU's ? At the output - when the signal is sent to the speaker ?

It is used from the CD pickup lens to the pre amp. It is at the very early stage of decoding music.

with all due respect to navinji there is an article on the same thing available on a different forum which also states that since a 1-bit dac has to sample each of the 16-bits separately as compared to the 24-bit which sees it as a whole a certain amount of definition is lost. and i also have found online again, that a 1-bit dac has a signal to noise ratio of about 80-85db. whereas 20 and 24-bit dac's have a much higher snr of close to 120db. so if you think about multisampling and supersampling the latter is faster and as seen by the signal to noise ratio the end quality is better. and since the 24-bit dac's like the burrbrowns and others like the ti pcm 24-bit dac's are pricey they tend to come with better internals. thats the generalisation atleast. tho this is an interesting topic and i would love to see what the other gurus think. will continue research in the field.

Latter is exactly double of the former??

Imagine this:

1. There is a stream of water flowing through, between your's and LBM's house.
2. Volume flow rate of stream is 10 liters/ sec
3. You and LBM dump 2 kg each of leftover butter chicken in it per day.
4. Now, assume that the amount you guys are dumping remains the same, but the stream's rate becomes 20 liters/ sec; in terms of percentage of garbage per liter of water, which stream will be less polluted?

Now regard:

- yourself and LBM as the car, chassis and other unfriendly electrical devices
- the stream as the pure audio signal from the head unit's pre-out
- rate of the water's flow as the pre-out voltage
- the butter chicken as the unwanted noise

This is the first time I could understand ICE with ease.
All the gurus please answer queries in the same fashion.

Good you chose butter chicken instead of veg curry.
