Default Brooklands Annual Classic Car Show, 2017

The Brooklands Museum ( www.brooklandsmuseum.com ) holds its annual classic car show every year in July. It is the most important event in their annual calendar. The museum was originally the site of a race track - the race track still exists. While the museum has an amazing collection of classic, vintage, racing, F1 cars, buses, aircraft of various types including the Concorde that you get to see all year around the Classic Car Show is a one-off experience during the year.

This year the event was held on July 23rd (the day before yesterday as I write this). Members of the Brooklands bring in their own cars so you get to see A LOT of classic cars and they are all well maintained. The museum has ample space as the disused track is used as the display area.

Attended the meet this year and it was an awesome experience to see the sheer number and variety of immaculately maintained classic cars.

I'll let the pics do the talking:

1929 Le Mans Bentley with a 4 1/2 litre engine:

Alvis a British marque that ceased production in 1967 after which it was transferred to British Leyland / Rover. This is an original Alvis.

Thanks for sharing. Brooklands has a very rich automotive history of course. I visited the museum last year for the very first time and was hugely impressed.

You don’t mention it, but in several of your pictures the banked curves of the old circuit are still visible. I seem to recall they are/were in the process of moving some building in order to restore the original straight finish of the circuit. The museum grounds are covered with original buildings, one of which is the original speedfreak and many world record holder Campbell

Next to automotive, it also has an equally rich aviation history! Concorde is heavily tied into their history.

I visited the museum only once and wrote about it here,

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/commer...simulator.html (Experience: British Airways Concorde Simulator)

I absolutely love these classic car shows. The ones in the UK tend to be very good. Whether large or small they tend to be very well organised, very relaxed with plenty to see and do. And of course, talking to classic car owners will always get you a few great stories/insights.

This weekend here in the Netherlands the Dutch National Classic Car show at the circuit of Zandvoort. Bring your classic and you get free entry. I have already got my free ticket and if the weather holds I’ll take my Alfa Spider there for the day. They are expecting more than a 1000 cars. You can take your classic onto the circuit and have a blast!

Yes, Brooklands has a very rich history as it didn't start out as a museum but was originally a race track - I have mentioned this in my OP.

The part where the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow was parked is the steepest part of the race course and is called the "Members Banking" and reaches nearly 29 feet before descending onto the straight.

And yes, the old building has been moved out and is on the main grounds and referred to as the Brooklands Aircraft Factory. The straight is now clear and is the part where you see the Rolls Royce Silver Wraith standing with the cars in the background. They now intend to restore the ground area of the straight to its original state.

They also have a new part of the museum dedicated only to London buses starting the very first one to the currently running models and more.

This is a view of the main straight with the Members banking in the farthest background. The tall grey building on the left is the "Brooklands Aircraft Factory".

The poster for racing events to be held next month of hill climbs, grid starts and other demos. Note the attention to detail as the poster is completely in period design.

The Cafe amongst the cars in the museum:

The original petrol stations on the premises that were used during the races - still in working condition. Notice the vintage parts on sale during the show.

Thanks, this particular car show is the largest one, but they have all sort of special events throughout the years. Even without a special event, this place is very interesting to visit. The permanent collection of cars, planes and buildings is impressive on it’s own.

I could not spend much time in the bus museum, had to rush through a bit, but I did purchase two model of the original Route Masters in their little shop.

Thanks for sharing. It is really interesting to see the cars throughout the ages. However 2 vehicles that caught my attention were the VW Camper Van and the Rally trim Mini. I'm surprised to see such well maintained cars. Most of them appear to be in excellent shape and look really pampered.

Classic cars is a huge industry catering to enormous number of people that enjoy classic cars. There are some different streams within the classic car stream on how and what should be restored.

There is the unrestored cars. Which will mean essentially still the original factory paint and trimming, no noticeable work done on the engine/transmission.

These cars will always show their age, but they do so beautifully.

Then there are the restored to original specification. From very simple hobby job to very eloboratte lengthy and expensive major restoration, including body of restoration, new paint, overhaul of all components etc.

For several years there are “complaints” that cars get ‘over restored’. But it’s a personal choice.

VW buses, all models/years are very popular and values have rissen considerably over the last decade. A properly restored original Samba bus can fetch up to Euro 100.000

The Mini has been a favourite for many classic car enthousiast for many years. You can pick one up for really little money and next to the MGB it probably has the best after market spares, parts, knowledge etc available. It’s also small, light and you can do just about all jobs by yourself.

My wife and me have just bought a new house, with a huge garage for my classics. I really would like to do my own “ground up” restoration. Still thinking about what car, but last week I ordered three different books about Mini restoration from Amazon. Watch this space

Hobbyist are definitely capable of doing outstanding restorations these days. There is a huge industry catering for that, with tools, parts, workshop, courses.

I visited the Practical Classic Car restoration show in Birmingham earlier this year. See http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/diy-do...ml#post4174943 (My Car Hobby: A lot of fiddling, and some driving too! Jaguar XJR, Mercedes W123 & Alfa Romeo Spider)

Yes, some cars were in such good shape that they looked as if they were just driven out of the showroom. The Triumph TR4 A was one such car.

The Volkswagen van below was in very good shape too:

This is a Landrover camper that hadn't been restored (note the dents on the mudguard / paint wearing off etc)

A Morris 1000 that looked spanking new:
