The Morris Oxford Diesel (Series VI) was the first Morris to be powered by a diesel and was launched during the end of 1961. It was powered by the BMC overhead valve 1489 cc engine. Mainly meant for the export market, it was introduced into the UK later on, from the spring of 1962. Its fuel consumption was about 40 mpg, which was its only USP. The engine was noisy and rattly, emitting black smoke. The top speed was 66 mph and was reached with lots of patience. Other than the fuel economy it offered, there was little else to attract the customer. It was readily accepted by the taxi market for this sole reason.

The BMC B-Series 4 cyl OHV diesel engine had a displacement of 1,489 cc, turning out 40 bhp @ 4,000 rpm, with a torque of 64 lb ft @ 1,900 rpm. Its unladen weight was 2,520 lbs.

The diesel was sold from 1961-71 the same period as the model life of the Morris Oxford Series V and VI . During this period in the early 1960's, the petrol 1489 cc engine was upgraded to B-Series engine was enlarged to 1,622 cc with its 61 bhp / 81 mph output and maximum speed respectively, as compared to the 50 bhp of the older petrol engine.

The MO diesel proved to be extremely popular in the taxi market in the U.K. and in many of their erstwhile or then British colonies.

When the fuel prices in India sky-rocketed due to the oil shock of 1973 sending petrol prices spiralling, HM thought about a diesel power plant. Incidentally, HM shopped at Morris, then under the BMC and later British Leyland and got the licence to manufacture the very same diesel for the Ambassador. It was introduced as the Mark 4 Diesel in 1979. The diesel Trekkers were also powered by this diesel.

The same engine introduced in 1961 by Morris (BMC), continued to be fitted in Ambassadors as the 1500 DSL and also as the Classic version till August 2013. Around September first week, 2013, The Ambassador Encore was introduced with the same engine, aided by a turbocharger to conform to our BS IV norms. The BS IV engine developed 50 bhp, a modest increase of 10 bhp.

Paris is set to ban all motor vehicles registered before 1997 from entering the city wef 1/7/2016. And by 2020 they are likely to ban all vehicles older than 2010. However, as far as classics and older cars are concerned there is a whiff of FRESH AIR.

The fédération française des véhicules d'époque – an association that represents French classic car owners and enthusiasts – is still working hard to get the ban lifted for vintage cars. Paris is home to numerous top-dollar British, German, and Italian classics, and the city hosts the annual Rétromobile show. Several protests are planned in the coming weeks, and a class-action lawsuit has already been filed against the city of Paris by motorists who believe the government should help them buy a post-1997 car.

What Paris banning pre-1997 cars means for classic owners
Officials explain that getting rid of old cars will reduce air pollution in the French capital.

Let us hope the classics are exempted from the mindless actions of law makers and enforcers.

Anjan Ji,
Are you sure about this, AFAIK HM moved to Isuzu petrol and diesel engines in early 2000 and Ambassdors were powered by Isuzu ?
