I find that I am unable to rely on MMI Maps for any route off the main roads (Even in Bangalore and its outskirts). At least 3-4 instances where I tested out (Where I know the roads very well), it seemed to be directing wrong. I find Google navigation to be far more accurate and covers every small back roads and side roads also. This becomes a problem since for most of my needs, I know the general area and route and mostly need only the last mile navigation.

I have an In Dash AVN with MMI's Aura 3D maps and the version is the latest.

The unit must be overheating, leading to the touch screen giving spurious inputs. Keep it out of the sun, say in front of AC, and see if the unit makes the same sounds after operating for 30 min.

That is precisely what the navigation software must be trying to avoid because ... the setting for navigation strategy must be set to "Fastest route". If set so, the navigation algorithm selects the highest possible category of roads available on the possible routes to the destination (assumption: higher category road = faster road). "Shortest route" will select like Google. Of course, if some roads are not there in the map, the routing algorithm can't do anything even in the "Shortest route" navigation mode.

Be careful in reposing all faith in Google - sometimes Google will take you by roads so narrow that you will find yourself in tricky situations that Google can't see! On the contrary, I find the "Fastest Route" mode works better for me in navigation, and I can't figure out how to set that in Google Maps.

Is there any option to select the minimum width of the roads to be selected or something similar in Google Maps / Sygic. Many a times the selected shortcut roads are too narrow, so I never follow the suggested turns from the main route and force the app to reroute.

I believe you are asking about MMI (& not Google maps). There is an option under road types where you can chose optimal/paved/unpaved roads, etc. I may be wrong with the presented options name, but surely you have different routes/ roads for the same destination.

I think I am in the wrong thread, I was asking about the Google Maps / Sygic(MMI maps) android app.

In most of the cases where I have had issues, the above has been the case. One classic example is the road before the HAL Signal coming from MArathahalli that leads into LB Shastri Nagar. Somehow MMI does not show the connection between this road and Old Airport road. Surprising since it is a road that has been in existence for a very long time.

Agree. I treat the navigation as a guidance and try to use my common sense before committing to an unknown route google suggests. I now use both MMI and Google Navigation parallely and start to trust completely only at the point when both of them agree and are in sync

Could be another reason (a very common reason with MMI) - the data in the map has error, and the mapping software is unable to make a junction of the 2 roads. I have seen this with another road near where I stay. MMI QC is atrocious.

Thanks. Is this a known/acknowledged issue? Any fix/work around ?

Dunno if this is the right thread . I had been using the MMI RoadPilot for close to 3 years from 2009 to 2012 . The navigation was spot on and very accurate . Recently , I did a mistake of going for the MMI Mireo Dont Panic maps for the iOS . This app is really useless and is confused most of the times . We are unable to navigate to known landmarks . These days we use google maps whereever possible .

On this CASKA MMI device , how does one update the maps ?

Well, the device is at MMI service center, hence cannot check. You probably are right regarding overheating in the sun, but when the device is used during night time, it shows the same erratic click sound symptoms (with A/C on and cabin temperature not being high). Anyway, I will post after getting the device back from MMI.

Got my unit back from MMI. As per the service guy, there is nothing wrong with the unit. The touch screen going nuts is due to overheating because of the position at which the unit has been mounted on the car's windshield (unit's backside is exposed to direct sunlight).

He suggested that it would be better if it is mounted on the A/C vent so that the cool air takes care of any overheating issues. The mount that I got with the unit is windshield mount. Unable to locate any A/C vent type mounts here in Mangalore. Has anyone used A/C vent type mount for a GPS navigator and tell me where I can get one for my navigator?

Look for "Spider Podium" on ebay. You can adjust it to hang the unit at the AC vent (need not be in front of it, you need to put it just below it). Get the one that is sized for a tablet.

Looking around on e-bay, I found a Capdase Air Vent Mount for large sized mobile phones. Since the holder itself could be rotated 360 degrees, I was sure it would fit my MMI LX340. Here are the pics

Rubber padded legs ensure that it stays in its place:

It has a adjustable hook that latches onto the back side of an ac vent slat. Took me some time to figure out the most convenient location to mount it on the AC vent so that it does not interfere with wiper stalk operation. Best of all, there are no rattles from the mount & Navigator unit.

Pros:
Perfect for cooling my Navigator which was having issues because of overheating with the sun on its back.
Solid build, does not rattle even on bad roads.
Easier to access the navigator controls( compared to when it was mounted on the windshield)

Cons:
It may not be compatible with ac vent types found in other cars(mine's a 2009 i20 with horizontal ac vent slats).
For cars not equipped with steering mounted audio controls, it may cause inconvenience to the driver to operate the audio.

Today, I successfully installed version 9.0 maps in my Lx130 navigator. Now, I see state-wise maps are shown version and copyright details individually. I am yet to get the version 9.0 maps in my XUV 500's in-dash navigator.
