Default Is bass boost same as gain? What is the principle?

Hi Guys,

Was wondering if the bass boost in Class D mono amps same as 'gain'.

What is the principle behind giving a front driver controlled knob for bass boost? (obviously apart from increasing the bass!).
On what principles, the two differ?

Comments please..

Its not gain as far as I know, I believe this feature adds more depth to the bass i.e. makes it more deeper/punchier.

Ideally we first we set the gains on the mono keeping in mind the bass boost (should be half way) if one wants it, ones its set we do the caliberation on gelling it with the overall soundstage.

Some people like the bass to be more punchier on certain songs/occasions so the knob allows them to add that feature for those particular songs.

This is fairly as a layman explantion I could come up with.

A guess !

Gain works over the whole input frequency range, whereas bass boost applies 'gain' on a limited low frequency range?

The amp in question is mono class D.

Yes, but could it still be 'boosting' a certain smaller range within the LF input that comes into the amp?

Another related thought. Gain works on the low-level input? Is bass boost applied on the high level output?

Not sure about this but could it be that the gain setting boosts the entire frequency range of the amp (eg for alpine mrp-m500, it would be 50-200 Hz) but the bass boost enhances a particular frequency (50 Hz)...

No, bass boost is not the same as gain in the sense that bass boost is equalization - an increase in the level of a few of the sub bass frequencies (usually center freq. of 40-45Hz unless selectable). But the effects of applying bass boost are similar to increasing gain, in that the power consumption/ output is greatly increased and you could approach or cause clipping just like you would by setting gains too high.

It is not the same !!!

The bass boost is just gives boost to a single freq in your case 50 HZ...

check the manual..
http://www.jbl.com/resources/Brands/...%20OM%20LR.pdf

SETTING THE BASS BOOST
The GTO755.6, GTO301.1, GTO601.1 and
GTO1201.1 are all equipped with a bassboost
control. This allows you to adjust the
bass output of your system at 50Hz up to
12dB and enhance low frequency.

And the remote gain only increase the output till the gains are set not more than that !!!

unless we know which specific amp we're talking about, and the details of how it works , or at least some description is given, i think we can best take shots in the dark. From what i know, loudness/bass boost are attempts to compensate for the ear's non linearity

As many have already explained, bass boost is increasing the gain for a band of signal (say from 50 - 150 hz) as Greenhorn mentioned its usually to compensate for poor response of our ear to low frequency sound. However bass boost has an effect on how high you can push your source (stereo) volume before it clips. This is because the MAXIMUM gain for the entire frequency range would now be (gain * bass boost gain (say 3db)).

Hope it helps

You are right mostly except that it is not just the ear, but also the response of the speaker that is poor in that range.
