On a slightly off topic note, came across this app which makes it really a breeze to track all your offshore shipments

Mukundz, that looks very convenient. What is the name of the app?

Guys,

Is anyone using this kind of DVR? I am looking at buying one. This looks good enough for average use.

On the App it is retailing at $28. I have a $9 coupon too.

Anurag, this looks like the mini 801, which was reported to be prone to overheating. The 805 and 806 have addressed this by including ventilation slots. The 806 also has a CPL filter, which is a great help in reducing glare and reflections from the dashboard. If budget permits I think the 806 would be the best option.
Mind you, all this info is from the Net. No personal experience, as I use another model.

Extended my budget a bit and thinking to get a MINI 0805 dashcam with GPS. Costs for the items are :

1) Dashcam: $62.86

2) CPL Filter (24mm) - $5 [Not sure of this fits, seller hasn't responded yet]

3) Hardwiring Kit: $5

Total: Rs 5202.

What say buddy? Should I go ahead?

Anurag, I think only the 806 has been designed to accept the CPL filter. Also, I just checked, IronH4wk has been using the 801 with GPS, so you could get first-hand info from him.

Hi FarPatel. Its an app called Deliveries. Really convenient to track both Indian and off shore couriers.

Also, I just got an alert from the app that my dash cam has been returned to the Bangalore Foreign post office from customs. Would you guys suggest to go and pick it up directly from their office?

After talking to H4wk about his opinion on 0801, (2.5 years ago) I too got the 0801 Mini.
IIRC, our model had a "3d printed" DIY mod-with-CPL for it (which I never bothered with, although it looked pretty awesome in the results).

I remember reading that it's a magnetic CPL, which fits on 0806.
For 0805, people have been using double sided tapes/or other means to secure the filter.

Check the above linked forum for more model specific details.
People there seem to recommend 0806 over 0805

Cheers,

Ace.

Spoke to quite a few sellers on AliExpress to get a best deal for the MINI 0806 with GPS and CPL Filter 24mm.

After a lot of discussion have zero'd down on one. The final cost is $92 with shipping by Singapore Post.

Since this a long term investment that I'll be carrying over to my next car too, went ahead and increased the budget.

Read many reviews and videos of that cam. Pretty much satisfied. Hope it doesn't disappoint me.

The wait begins....

Default Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I started looking for a dashcam for my Polo GT with the following requirements.

1. Budget $200
2. Good video both day and night to be able to read number plates
3. Should be very compact and almost invisible
3. Reliable. Preferably capacitor model. If battery, should have good reliability records to withstand summer heat
4. Easy to switch between two cars
5. GPS with speed stamp in the videos

After following this thread for a long time, reading various reviews of fellow TBHPians and also from the web, I shortlisted A118C and DOD LS460W.

A118C

Pros:
Excellent daytime videos
Very compact and is not visible easily from outside
Capacitor model, and hence no Li-Ion battery concerns

Cons:
Average night time videos
GPS is an optional attachment. Even with GPS, speed data is not embedded in the video

The USP of this camera is its compact size. It is almost invisible from outside. The day time videos are excellent. The main disadvantage is the average night time video quality. And it does no tembed speed data on the video. Speed can be viewed only by using a software. However, for the price point this camera sells, this is the best VFM dashcam I could think of.

DOD LS460W

Pros:
Excellent optics uses Sony ExMor image sensor
Excellent daytime and night time videos
In built GPS with speed data embedded in the video

Cons:
Bigger than A118C and would be visible outside
Many reports that the device goes out of focus in heat

The USP of this camera is its excellent day and night videos. From various reviews and comparisons I read, this looked to be the best in mid range dashcams in terms of video quality. Also, this was feature rich and could embed lots of information in the video including speed. However, there were two major issues. First is the size. Due to it's big size, this camera would be very prominently visible from outside which could attract undue attention. Also, there were many reports that the camera goes out of focus in high temperatures, owing to some issue with optics.

Though I wanted this model for it's video quality and features, the size and focus issue were major deterrants.

As I was reading reviews for both the above cameras, came across another model.

Street Guardian SG9665GC

Pros:
Excellent day and night videos
Very compact and is not easily visbile from outside
Excellent optics uses Sony ExMor image sensor with glass lens
GPS comes as standard
Supports upto 128GB SD card

Cons:
Does not embed speed data on video. This has to be done later using software

This one has the same size of A118C and hence is not visible from outside. Also, due to the better optics, image sensor and processor, this has excellent day and night time videos. I felt this camera offered the best features of both A118C and DOD LS460W. The only drawback was this camera does not embed speed data on the video. But with other advantages, I decided to ignore this disadvantage. This also comes with two mounts, so that I can have the mounts fit to both the cars. I just need a hard wire kit for the other car.

I have placed the order for the SG9665GC from Amazon, and expecting it in a couple of weeks (a friend is hand carrying it from the US). Chose the 64GB model. Total cost including shipping $248. Though this was beyond the budget, as I plan to use this on both the cars, and as this will be a long term investment, I decided to stretch the budget.

Will post some feedback once I install it in the car.

Getting the following memory card for 1100 @ Snapdeal.

Samsung 64 GB UHS-I 80MB/s Class 10 Evo Plus Micro SDXC Card (with SD Adapter)

Read Speed: up to 80 MB/s and
Write speed: up to 20 MB/s.

Worth a buy for the dashcam?

I think the 0806 uses a TF card. Better check if it's the same as the SDXC card you're looking at.

Have already posted this question to the seller also.

I've been using the same 64GB card in my Transcend Drivepro 220 without any issues and 32GB one in the Blaupunkt being used by my brother. It'll work if its a class 10.

If the video has to be shown as evidence, then in most of the cases it will go against the person, thanks to the ridiculous speed limits in some parts in the country.

See the thread about the guy in Kozhikode, who hit a jaywalker, rather a kid who just ran across the road, the guy confessed that he was at 50-60km/hr as he couldn't go any slower thanks to the KSRTC buses, which were behind him, and had nearly driven him off the road earlier.

I think it is a boon, that you can see the speed, using a special software!

Regards
Shailesh
