Brian Tyler featuring Slash - Mustang Nismo. This a track from the Tokyo Drift movie...

This is one of the best to listen if you have a very good ICE setup!

Default guitar solos and instrumentals: part 3

Ok, on to guitar instrumentals:

Jazz:
1. California Dreaming - George Benson (forget Mamas & Papas, this is the real stuff )
2. Myna Bird Blues - George Benson
In fact most of Benson's early/CTI records work is simply amazing

Blues:
1. Riviera Paradise - Stevie Ray Vaughan (RIP, a great loss)
2. Jelly 292 - Hendrix (ditto)

Jazz/Rock/Fusion:
1. Race With Devil on Spanish Highway, Cruisin' (live version - yeah!) - Al Di Meola
2. One Word - Mahavishnu Orchestra (ok, this is more of a jam b/w guitar, keyboard and electric violin, but check it out, at one point it becomes very difficult to tonally tell the instruments apart, also mixed well so instruments are well placed in the soundstage, solid bass, double bass-drum setup used too)
3. The Life Divine, Let us Enter the House of the Lord - John McLaughlin & Santana (from the album 'Love Devotion Surrender' - simply revelatory! Never thought Santana was upto this stuff, very interesting & ambitious interpretation of John Coltrane/Pharaoh Sanders using 2 electric guitars and latin percussion elements)

Rock (am grouping this artist-wise):
1. Joe Satriani -
Flying In a Blue Dream
One Big Rush
Why?
Summer Song
Crystal Planet (also check out drumming at end)
Ceremony
Love Thing, Until We Say Goodbye, Always with me Always with you (ballads)

2. Steve Vai (not much of a fan)
For the Love of God

3. Eric Johnson
Cliffs of Dover
East Wes
Manhattan
Camel's Night Out
Pavilion

4. Couple of standouts from an album called 'Guitars that Rule The World'
Black Magic - Reb Beach (what a riff)
Farm Fiddlin' - Zakk Wylde (starts off with country style accoustic and switches to electric mid-way, Zakk used to play for Ozzy Osbourne BTW)

Of course I've left out rock greats like Zappa (havent 'got' him yet perhaps coz I've been sober during listening sessions ), Malmsteen (damn fast but eventually boring) and solo efforts by a whole bunch of axemen who played for big bands, accoustic/flamenco e.g. Paco De Lucia etc (not evolved enough to really appreciate), jazz - Wes Montgomery/Django Reinhardt/Earl Klugh etc, blues & classical guitar (never heard enough) but that's due to lack of exposure and a less than perfect memory! Hope others will fill in....

Keep enjoying the music :-)

Default Michael Hedges

Forgot to mention this in Part 3:

Recently picked up his album 'Aerial Boundaries'. All-acoustic, very intricate and varied. Interesting enough for attentive listening, yet suitable for background fill...

One of the songs has been created on a special guitar synthesizer.

The genre for this kind of music was best described by Michael himself - "Heavy Mental"

Haha sounds funny. Another nice instrumental act that I love a lot is Acoustic Alchemy. Not very heavy or anything... just nice and relaxing music with a progressive edge.

For tight bass and good mids, you may try Infected Mushroom's 'Converting Vegetarians' album. It's a bit old, but I like the bass in it.
