Right now, the songs that sound best in my ICE are those of Keb' Mo', Diana Krall, Madeline Peyroux, Alison Krauss (her older ones), good ol' Knopfler and the Eagles. Been hunting around for Might Sam Maclean without much results.
Have you tried searching in limewire ?

Kudos on your taste in Music.

If I may add. try out any of the Double Bass jazz Nos (Ideally by Ray Brown trio) these have a lot of sub 50 hz harmonics and if they are all tight and you can feel the tension in the strings, your bass response in the Car is good for all practical reasons

I dont think treble will be a problem in the front seat as the tweeters are usually focussed on the driver and there is no indirect sound (Ideally)

for the Midrange, Madeleline Peyroux is good as her sound has a ..if i can describe it, a Silky Smooth Gruffness (LoL..!!)

Allison Krauss is of course Brilliant as she can be.

Keb Mo..I like him and use his work for the Accoustic pieces (Along with Clapton Unplugged)

Another piece which is an instrumental, which i do like to use is an All Bamboo Instrumental buy a group called TakeDake with Neptune and called Asian Roots. Their "bamboo sounds" which are pretty well put with good and clear bass and treble.

jagjit singh is another singer who is a must to play as if his songs are good and realistic that means all harmonics in a male voice is Audiophile Good . Don Heleys voice is also another great song for bringing out all the harmonics and so is Willy Nelson, Bhupinder and Kenny Rogers.

Dire Straits of course is the king of the Bass Guitar and has lots of Low bass acoustics,

Have not come across Might Sam Maclean till now..but if he can be mentioned along the same breadth as the above..then i must try him.

well yes the Ennio Morricone CD is a soundtrack based one... but YoYO ma and the Morricone combination turn even a soundtrack into a classic... The cd is to be heard to be believed..

Some great songs/artists in this thread. Some, as Zak said, very nostalgic. Here is my list, though not specific to car audio; these are the songs I always use to audition:
  • Ishq Bina - Taal; opening sequence and vocals
  • Paani Paani - Machhis; vocals and string bass
  • Hotel California (Live Acoustic) - Eagles; opening sequence from guitar(s) to drums
  • Lovers Rock/King of Sorrow - Sade; the amazing vocals and the bass that hits sub-40Hz
  • Bang, bang - Nancy Sinatra; vocals
  • Take Five - Dave Brubeck Quartet; great sound stage, especially the alto sax movements
  • Radha Kaise Na Jale - Lagaan; real bangles used by ARR in the background, great for sound stage and naturalness of sound
  • Blower's Daughter - Damien Rice; for variety in voice textures and the cello bass
  • Kitu - Deepak Ram; mainly for the flute interlude, also bass vocals
  • Rotterdam - Beautiful South; strings and vocals
By this time, I will know

PS: I am not a subwoofer guy, but have heard that Cars That Go Boom is the best for some stomach churning bass.

hey sh@rpshooter! Thanks for the suggestions. I'm always on the lookout for new music (new to me, I mean)

And yes, it is difficult to describe Madeline Peyroux's voice. Like some others, her voice is a bit of an acquired taste, I guess.

Mighty Sam Maclean is like Keb' Mo' and Ray Charles rolled into one, with more of Keb' Mo', but at the same time with more Jazz-ishness than Blues-ishness.

simply ' RDB ' or Enigma are my personal favorites for showing off ICE. For clarity & effects play Riders on the storm - NFS Soundtrack.
