Last year or maybe in 2007 they were doing a survey to see the potential for a WS service designed to be used in cars or while being mobile. What became of it is anybody's guess. But yes the WS stream would continue to work as long as you hold a near straight allignment but with constant turns in a city the beam will get distorted. In short its good for long train journeys and the roads that stretch in a straight line over miles.

Default works even on hign seas

I have used the world space Diva receiver on the ship.I was doing gulf and coastal India run and the receiver worked perfectly fine.I used a coaxial cable (same which we use the for our cable TV) to connect the antenna with the receiver and just kept the antenna on the port bridge wing. I kept the patch antenna fully flat facing the sky upwards and lo! it worked. Even during the worst weather , choppy seas with heavy rolling , the reception was always there. What amuses me is that I had virtually kept the antenna at the mercy of the elements and nothing happened to it.I felt never away from home with good ndtv news .
Yesterday an executive who had come for renewal ,told me about a new car receiver launch. But their website has no mention of it.

Naj, I have used the WS receiver with the Yagi antenna on the ship in every coverage area of all the six beams of Afristar and Asiastar.
Always worked fine! Little tweaks to the antenna every few days.

That's great Anup sir!Are you also a seafarer? or are in Indian Navy.
This time I had a bit of a problem in receiving the beams . The world space guys have a bad habit of changing the passwords now and then. I could not receive any beams for quite sometime ,especially I was keen to know about election results .
Another thing is that one cannot have fixed wiring on tankers as it will compromise safety. Bulky is ok.

Aye, I'm a seafarer too!
The wiring aspect remains the same whether you use a Yagi or the patch antenna.
I've been doing PCCs and had no problem setting up a Yagi as we all live on the rooftop anyway, LOL!!

I've always carried my passwords for both the satellites with me.

Guys, lets leave the ships out on the seas, unless you drive one in conditions similar to what our cars go through - LoS blocked, directions changing every few lights, other disruptions etc ..

Condor, WS has been selling mobile antennae in Europe for a few years now! Why not in India?
It's not as though the technology does not exist!
XM and Sirius in the US have always offered mobile solutions. In fact that is their largest market; satellite radios for cars.

Anupji, I have been following up on that. Possible that red-tapism is stopping deployment for mobile units, though it beats all logic for me about restricting such usage. Things like license vs revenues included.

The fact that the technology exists is the reason that I myself am waiting for the usage here.

I read in today's TOI Bangalore edition that Worldspace is winding up operations in India. It will go silent from 31st December, 2009
The article stated that the company has gone belly up.

I suppose thats RIP Worldspace and thank you for the music.
Now we are at the mercy of local FM and their endless adverts.

Here is the link to the article
WorldSpace to stop service from New Year - India Business - Biz - The Times of India

However, the article states, "in a communication to its subscribers..." but i am yet to get any such communication from them. Maybe they didn't pay their internet bill either

Sad to see the revenue model - advertisements not working. Now my 9 year old WS receiver goes into the trash can !! Losing about 6 months subscription money.
