@tush

the 9884 is a very nice head unit. has a easy to use interface and 3 pre outs among many other features. and the price you are getting is just below MRP so its pretty good. not sure about what pricing in Mumbai is like. so do check around for competitive rates.

@ akshay4587

please do stay away from the Sony head units. too much trouble over long term use. First choice would be an Alpine closely followed by Pioneer. the 9874 would be priced along your budget.

Default pricing

in the mid price range - go for only kenwood or pioneer HUs. Higher budget would justify an eclipse/alpine.
Avoid Sony HUs as there are a slew of problems associated with data reading.

And how are Sony HU's?
I am getting a Deal for around 5K for one(forgot model name) the one with front USB and Aux in ports.

Sony HU will keep you satisfied for time being .. You can always update later..

& for 5k USB & aux is a mouth watering deal buy it !!

@ ashvin & ascertain there is no problem with HU .. they are quite dependable & no problem with data reading may be some issues with SQ but they still do their job well

Kenwood 5039 HU retails for 5K (w/o B&W). It supports USB. Why not go for Kenwood over Sony?

@ chiragh_bir

well about the Sony HU's i only speak from experience. I had picked one up a few years back and after a while it showed mechanism problems. spent about 1500 rupees getting that rectified and then over time the buttons have stopped working. now another friend with a Sony HU has also developed mechanism problems.

Like you said the Sony HU will keep you satisfied for time being. after that its as good as a paper weight. When one is willing to spend 5k now, better to invest a few thousands more and pick up a more reliable HU which would be trouble free and last you longer. I regret picking up that Sony HU for 6k back then.

its better to think long term. than to just buy something for the time being.

Ideal budget for a good first time HU is 10k.
It should have 3 pre outs, should have a remote, should be able to accept USB, iPod connections and if it can play more than 2/3 formats, then excellent.

These days, Alpine HUs with these features are available in grey. Jvc, Panasonic also makes some good HUs with the above features and comes in this price. Pioneer makes some good HUs in this budget.
My selection by choice in this lot is Kenwood 6539! An amazing HU for it's price and features.

i recently got a Panasonic HU CQ-C7405W fitted on my baleno.. with 3 RCA out, 1 aux out - for ipod,
the price was about 6K with B&W. the good thing about panasonic is the reading speed.it is super fast. i had jvc before this and it used to take ages... same thing with pioneer..seen it on my friends..

Panasonic is a good one.. consider it !!

MP543 seems to have replaced the 5039U and is priced at Rs 8K with B&W.
