congarts, very nice ice.
i need suggestions. i have a pio 6850 which i want to upgrade. should i upgrade to 7950? is it better in terms of sq? the 6850s display lights are too bright and too blue for my liking. also im getting a pio component cd receiver, the blacck one in the catalog. its for 23k w/o b/w. what say guys? do i need it? im planning for an active setup. will be upgrading everything exept the sub. should i upgrade to 3 way comps? i really feel the need as mid range is a little lacking in my esk165s. \

cheers

Question

Didn't want to start a new thread so here goes.
Current setup:
Pio 7950UB
JBL GTO 607C in the front stock location
Pio 6X9 rear fills
JBL 75.4 driving the speakers
JBL BTX 250 active bass tube

Now, the dilemma. I was quite happy with this setup till I got a 10" sub in a ported box and a mono block for my other car. I would like the same kind of tight bass in my Octy. Getting rid of the bass tubes (I've 2) is a problem though.

So Gurus, what are my options? How about a 75.4? Is it good for subs? Could the 4 channels be somehow bridged to feed one monster sub? Or do I need 2 subs? If I get one sub, could the remaining 2 channels of the amp be kept idle?

Thanks in advance..

I think yes, if you have a DUAL-COIL sub, you could bridge the 4ch amp to get 2 bridged channels, each of which can drive once coil.

And yes, a channel pair can be left idle.

@ DerAlte - Could you point me towards some Dual Coil subs available in the market? Do these sound better than Single coil ones? Is the 75.4 good enough for boofer duties or should I stick to a mono block?

DVC subs are not nesscarily better than SVC subs. the 75.4 will drive a sub well but a monoblock like the Pio D510 or JBL 301.1 will do that job better. of coruse teh monoblocks cant do much else., the 75.4 can also power your front components (while driving a SVC sub).

The sad news is that JBL decided to stop making the 75.4.

@ Navinji - There is a 75.4 with my dealer and I've put it on hold. I was considering the 75.4 so that I could get 2 subs. But, If a monoblock and one sub does the job, I'm not complaining. I already have a 75.4 powering the speakers.

Wrt monoblocks and subs, what are my options? Budget is "jitna kum mein hoga". Would prefer a 12" sub though. Should I go for a sub and get the nclosure separate? Or do I buy a complete setup?

well pending the demise of the cs 300.1 and the JBL GT5 monoblock still not being available (to the best of my knowldge) the vfm deal in this space is a Pio D510 for 10K mated to a JBL GT5 sub in a box (about 5K). The next significant step up would cost you almost double.

There you go @shuvd. Get the GT5
@Navin, I guess the sub itself costs 5K. He'll need around 2K more for the box.

@ Navinji - Between the Pio 7300 and D510, which one would you recommend? Haven't seen the D510 here. GT5 subs aren't available in Calcutta yet. Any idea about Coustic amps and Helix subs?

@ shuvc - GT5 not available here yet.

D510 any day. 500W v/s 360W.

Dont bother with Coustic and the entry level Helix really.

The D510 performs well, what price are you getting it for?

@ Navin, B&T, s0uljah - My dealer says that the D510s are obsolete now and the 7300 is the current model . I got the 7300 for my other car a couple of months back for around 9k I think. So much confusion. Should I wait for the JBL GT5 series?

How is the GTO 1204BR {http://www.fxaudio.com/caraudio/jbl-subwoofers-gto1204br.htm}? The dealer is quoting "around 7k".

For single 4 ohms voice coil subwoofer, I would not recommend a mono like the 510 and 7300. You'll be better off running them off a powerful 2 channel amp in bridged mode. Get a mono only if you're using a DVC sub.
