Sir Mustache-ji ,what kind of car are you talking about here ? In my ever so humble experience, all the modern cars with "Power brakes" (which ones do not have ?), the brake system is linked with the engine running and "providing the power assist", right no, sirji ? Yes, the brakes WILL work without the engine running, only you have to stand on the brakes here.

Sir john-ji, were you trying to contradict me, or were you trying to make the same or some other point? Though we are seriously OT in this thread:
- Rear brakes, drums usually, will work properly without boost
- Discs require vacuum-assist definitely, and vacuum comes from engine operation
- Most cars here have discs in front and drums rear
- If the car is on a 0-45deg incline with engine off, and is at rest, the rear drums exert enough force to hold it still. And, one doesn't have to 'stand' on the brakes (helps if one just pumps the brake pedal a couple of times)
- In the above case, if after the car comes to rest the driver switches off the engine and forgets to (or decides not to for whatever reason) use the handbrake or the brake ... hehehehe the design / technology shouldn't be blamed, since if the car is moving ->
- The behavior, and contribution from drums v/s discs, is quite different. If braking from, say, 50Kmph to 0, discs are more efficient / effective than drums. But, if braking from 10Kmph to 0 (with engine off), the drums are enough. No?
Q.E.D.!

Shall we get back to talking CarPCs, sir?

Perhaps they did not associate it with the fact that during cranking, the power to the Cig Lighter sockets is switched off! The only way the charger can get damaged
Hi DerAlte - Pardon me but I would like to disagree with you. I have ford fiesta and the cig lighter socket gets power all the time, no matter if the engine is running or not. Even during cranking the power to lighter is not switched off. Probably some cars might have that safety feature, which you're talking about.

I guess you need to explore your car a bit more.
I'm a noob when its comes to cars technical features but having said that I'm exploring it all the time and am learning faster here with team-bhp.

- Yes, with engine off the power steering does not get power assist.
- Once used to a power steering vehicle, it get quite difficult to switch back to a non power assist. In sudden situations when engine cuts off and if your vehicle is rolling back, it can get quite difficult. I have experienced it.

Not required unless one is trying to do like Bangalore auto drivers - coasting down a slope with engine switched off
I own a diesel car so I have not reached that stage yet to save fuel

Really? I seriously doubt that.

- One sometimes needs to use the rear-view cam with engine off. Typically, this is at a stop light with engine off, and one wants to check how much space one has behind to reverse the car if the guy in front is having a problem
Yes, agree with you, that's experience talking. Thanks.

Sorry for diverting the thread. Lets get back to carputer.

One problem I see in this is that there are connectors on every side, hence a compact install may not be possible.

Oh, you most certainly may. But, cutting off power to all loads other than the ignition system during cranking (not engine running as you put it) is an automobile industry design standard, and I wouldn't expect Ford to have done otherwise. At the same time, I will not be surprised if they did the reverse. The only way one can get uninterrupted power is if directly wired from the battery.

Yes, does require some muscling, but if the car is rolling it is not that bad. At rest with engine off it is rather very difficult.

A silly mistake by me fried the Pi before i realized and its story ended in a tragic burn out. Pictures of final setup below and as you can see i used all black wires inside it, hence didn't realize the 12v and 5v lines got interchanged during final assembly. otherwise it was good in function.

Now want to try out Intel DN2800NT. need a compatible hard disk for it for slim mount to push it in the slot where the OBD port of Octavia exists.
Other idea was to use the amkette evo tv in car but want a model with 1gb ram.
