Default frankmehta needs a new head unit!

just saw the eclipse 3100 on sale with a one year fujitsu warranty for 10.5k.
how does it compare to my faithful 7950UB?
if its only marginally better, im not getting it. but if someone says, there is a HUGE change in sound quality i might think of the eclipse.
have a week to decide so please let the suggestions pour in.
also interested in an eclipse 7200mk2 but the budget is doubled. lets see.

FYI: i DO NOT play audio cds. i only play mp3s off the USB. the cd drive is never used. THUS i dont know if upgrading the HU will yield any changes in sq. i listen to only high quality mp3s though, 256kbps or higher. most of my songs are 320kbps or VBR rips. please consider this, first and foremost, as however good the CD hardware will be, i wont be burning audio cds/mp3 cds now.

Where did you find it? Any other models of Eclipse?

AFAIK, the 3100 does not have USB input. The 5100 does.

kpzen, has it installed on his car. Checkout the following thread:

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/sound-...nds-great.html

Also the 7200 MKII should cost you around 40-50k in grey. This was the last price I heard. If you are getting it in double the cost of 3100 (ie around 20k), let me know. I would also be interested.

If you play cd (mp3) then there will be a difference of night and day when compared to 7950. Have not tried the USB part.

Are you saying the same mp3 song if played from a usb drive vs burned in a cd will sound different on the same HU?

Yes I think so. They have different chips reading each source and converting data. I should think it works this way. Someone please correct me

I guess he meant that the same mp3 cd when played in eclipse sounded much better than pio.

Even I have heard that the same mp3's if played from a cd might sound better than from a usb or HDD. Maybe because of the different processing circuitry. If that is the case I have to try burning the songs on my HDD to 4 or 5 DVDs.

Sorry frankmehta for deviating from the thread.

I vouch for the fact that songs played off my pen drive sound much better than if the same file is burned as an mp3 on to a cd. This implies that the circuitry of the pioneer that plays music off the usb is far far superior to the mechanism that plays mp3s... Now the question on every ones minds is, whether the usb converter in the pioneer measures up to that on the alpines or eclipses. That's my question too. I don't care about the cd pickup lens or the other hardware on the others..
Since it hasn't been proven how much better the alpines and eclipses play usb drives, I can't change my hu till we have a tried n trusted report on that. Let me say this at the cost of sounding repetitive, that I want to compare between the usb playing capabilities of the pioneer as opposed to the eclipses and alpines.

i guess not many people listen to music on usb drives. surprised as its very practical and you avoid the usual problems with cds, like scratches and skipping on bumps. im still waiting to hear the verdict on someone who knows whether changing the HU will make a big difference whil playing usb!

just curious frank, you do write the mp3's as a data disc right ? I hope you dont use nero's mp3 cd option or equivalent where some sort of processing is done to the mp3's

alternately, are the source levels ( and other settings) for both the CD and USB set the same

sla is always 0 for both.
eq is also always flat.
burnt as data disc.
no bass boost/no added processing.
still the USB sounds much better.

i dont really get how it seems to sound different coz at the end of the day the only actual difference is that it is data being transported from the cd to the decoder versus the drive to the decoder. though you might have the possibility of fewer dropped frames owing to the possibility of faster data rates with the drive. but i maybe wrong.
