Default Time to Change/Upgrade ICE?

I am wondering if it is time to change/upgrade ICE in my car?

Current Setup:
HU: Sony Xplod with iPod/Aux inout 52W x 4 max

Speakers - Front:
JBL Components installed within doors & JBL Tweeters on A pillar

Speakers - Rear:
JBL 6x9 Ovals mounted on MDF tray

I also remember having a JBL crossover.

Sorry, I don't remember the model no's 'coz all I knew about car audio those days was that JBL is good & BOSE is expensive!

This setup is approx 2.5 yrs old. Now I and my friend who frequently travels with me feel that the the sound quality has changed, some bit of jarr exists. Yes this could also be due to difference in source/CDs used.

So, is it time to change the ICE 'coz its old enough now?

I was anyway planning to upgrade the HU & add a SW & Amp. So should I replace the whole setup or just add a SW , Amp to the existing setup.

My plan if I'm upgrading is:

HU: JVC 8xx or Pio AVH 3510 2 Din
Speakers: Front & Rear - JBL again
Amp: JBL ??
SW: No idea here

Budget: About 50k
Car: Baleno

Please provide your suggestions, with model no. & approx prices.

Thanks Much! AR

HU : Do you really want a Video?
Speaker : JBL / Illusion / Ground Zero are some options.
Amp : JBL 1004 will do the work pretty good
SW : Ground Zero ( Contact LBM / Bass&Trouble)

Default Change HU and Add a sub.

You could better look for a better HU in the range of Alpine, Pioneer.

Change of sub to GZ, ID/IDQ would be ideal. You would need a decent amp to power these though.

jarring = vibration/distortion?
distortion = underpowered HU
vibration = speakers need attention. Get your installer to check them out.

1. Check that all the speaker screws are tight and not come loose budget free
2. Add damping to the front doors and trunk budget 5K
3. add good 4 ch. amp if you like JBL the 1004 is a good bet budget about 12-14K
4. add sealed boxed sub budget about 6-7K
5. upgrade HU to one with TA and 3 pre outs. budget about 15K
---------------
5+13+7+15 = about 40K see we actually came under budget on ICE

50k is a great budget to start with. I'd say there are 2 weak links in your setup. You know that the head unit must go. But since you plan to spend 50k, i'd suggest a good amp and a good set of components too! The present jbl component set should be put on sale. You haven't suggested what kind of music you listen to, so i'll suggest a balanced setup for the time being. The first and major upgrade will be the Hu. I'd suggest you get a competent pioneer or alpine or eclipse or higher end Kenwood head unit. The budget for the head unit must be between 10 and 15k. A good suggestion would be the Eclipse 3200 which supports time alignment, bluetooth, usb, aux, high voltage preouts, the works:-) that will cost about 15k. Pm me if you don't know where to find it in your city. I shall guide you. The next big upgrade could be the amp. Now i'd say a Jbl 1004 or a ground zero iridium series amp should do a good job keeping your components and sub happy with adequate power. A good front set of components is adviced. I'd suggest the Illusion Electra series which sound great for their price. They will cost 7k. Another good option is the jbl power series. Should cost about ten k. The sub must be a good competent one that should blend will with the components. A ground zero mk2 sub should do you a whole lot of good. You could also explore options from Jbl. The sub will cost about 6k. The wiring and installation must be spot on! Hence keep aside about 7k for wiring, rcas, sub enclosure and installation. Another 3k must be reserved for damping. There! You're set! Done in about 50k! Cheers!

Thanks for all your suggestions. So here's my POA:

1) First I go & have the existing setup examined for any issues ; fix/replace as needed. I can always put the old ones into the M800 (poor fellow it is)

2) Change HU to better one. 2 DIN will be for better looks only. I have made a note of things to look for from your comments though I don't understand much of it :-)

3) Get a JBL 1004 4 channel Amp - This is for the Front & Rear speakers I presume?

4) Get a GZmk2 SW - I beleive I will need a separate Amp to run this? btw how do I install 2 SWs? Will I need two amps for this?

5) Damping & Wires - I'll go thru ICE install threads to understand this

Great! Thanks again for your suggestions. And yes, lessons learnt from one of my friend's car's ICE installation - No Sony!

Cheers, AR

what part do you not get? i can elaborate on that? please refrain from 2 Din. There's not many 2 Din units that boast of superior sonic quality.

nope, its for the front components and the SUB. you don't need to amplify the rear fills. Unless you are driven. then the components must go in the rear doors and there should be no components upfront! the 1004 supplies about 100 odd watts to the compos on each side, and 284 W RMS to the sub. that is quite good for the components and sub in question.

nope, you use 2 channels of the above mentioned JBL GTO1004 amplifier. 2 subwoofers will need a powerful monobloc amplifier to run them. Why do you need 2 subs? since you are graduating from an ampless system without any subs, you will even find the thump of one GZ sub more than enough to handle

a ground zero wiring kit is available, i think GZPK20/GZPK30. check Hermit Audio Pvt. Ltd. for more details. For speaker wiring, use Illusion Audio reference 16AWG wiring. ALso, RCA's must be of good quality to shield any noise / whine in the speakers

you BET that!

What i suggest you do is, go to a competent installer in your city, ask him to provide you a quote, listen to his demo car(s) see different setups etc
the ICE experience must be felt and not read up
in 50K you will get good installation, components in front, 6x9s rear, a HU and a sub. the front compos and sub will be amplified.
Check out EVO in bangalore. the contact details have been given on the forum.
Please hear and then buy. All the best!
