Multi-element AKA co-axial speakers are a compromise on space. You almost never have the highs (which are highly directional) and mids (Still quite directional) in the ideal position. The only thing a multi axial speaker can offer you is convenience ad a reduced cost.

These speakers also carry no crossover, just a capacitor to limit the lows going to the tweeter. This is also done ONLY to protect the smaller mids and tweeters, not for listening pleasure.

A component set, on the other hand, has a full blooded passive croosover, with inductors and capacitors and resistances and every other jingo that goes into constructing a good speaker.

Also, all companies (including JBL) take the sound of components more seriously, because of the more discerning clientele that purchase components.
Hence, components as a rule are always better constructed than multi element speakers.
Also, because you have individual elements seperately, you can position them as per your choice.

You can also tinker with the crossover setting (for advanced users) to change the response.

YES YES YES it's worth it!!

ASEEM: I will be telling what to do very shortly to change that undesired brightness on your GTO606Ce. I'm going to give you step by step instructions and it WILL be easy. Let me just finish this all-india tour.

Arrow Getz + Sony

I am perfectly happy with Head unit amplifier for normal use. I will get a head unit with preamp out for later addition of amplifier.

What I want to know is if I can use non powered sub directly driven from head unit. Some of the sony head units do have seprate sub out

Sam, sad I was on a limited budget. Next time maybe. But is there any way I could incorporate a couple of good dome tweeters with my 936 and 426. Or here is a wild idea. How would little boxes on the dash be for the 426. That way the tweeter can be focussed at the listener.

If it is not too much trouble, please let me know too. Just want to learn more and more.

I was wondering what kind of cores are used for inductors in crossovers for car systems. If they use air core ones, the coils will be bigger and there will be more power loss. Of course, the DCR could be kept low but I was just curious.

A multi axial speaker with additional tweeters will give you more highs that you bargained for. Little boxes for the 426e have been done before, Improves the mid-bass, whatever little there is and add a depth to the male vocal, if the crossover is set right.
what sexy weather you have in bangalore vivek, you lucky dog.

Guys i need some urgent advice - A few months back, one of the rear speakers (left one to be precise) started crackling so the speakers were replaced with Alpine 690A. Now the right side speaker has started crackling. I am not sure if I am plain unlucky or there is a problem with the HU. How do I find out that the HU is behaving OK? I generally use moderate volumes (12-14.... dunno the max but i'd asssume its 25). The HU is Sony 5500FX. No external amplifiers. I need to do a bit of homework before I pester my dealer to get me a new pair of speakers - don't want them to get fried if the HU is bad.

What kind of boxes would be good for the 426? I was thinking of fibreglass. My brother is a fine arts graduate and knows how to make them. But mounting them on the dash is a little problematic. And there is not much space on an Alto's dashboard.

Yes, the weather is nice but not good for those who use bikes more like me. Bangalore generally has good weather but I like the girls in Mumbai more than the ones here.
Till when are you in Bangalore?

Arrow Confused on components.

hi sam/navin,

A friend of mine is coming from US and i thought of asking him to bring a set of components (5.25"). Which one should i go for?

I saw some deals for Audiobahn in some sites. Infinity and Rockford fosgate are all out of my budget.

Audiobahn ABC525T - 71$( after disc and shipping)
Audiobahn DUB525C - 42$
Blaupunkt TSC540c - 56$

Could you please guide me which one is good , or is there any particular brand there in US which is really good and no popular here in india.

Thanks,
Dilshaw

ok one way to find out. idle the car. rev it till the buzzzing is most noticebale. ask a friend to touch the body of the amp and clamp it againt the glove box. if the buzzing stops you found the source.

let us know if theis works. we will help you one step at a time. Sam (who i've annointed as my mentor) is out on tour right now but when he gets back he will sure have some nice practical suggestions. till then we'll take this one step at a time.
Navin. Sorry for the mislead. Actually my amp is located on the floor below the carpet on the passenger side. Yesterday evening i was trying what you asked me to check. I felt the sound was causing by the RCA cable. Most of the length of the cable was hanging loose. Whenever my hand touched the cable there was either more disturbance or the sound was very clean.

I tucked the cable to a side and then there was no buzz. But whenever car is passing through rough patch the buzz occurs. Also i noticed sometimes along with the buzz another whining sound like 'suiiiiii' ( but it sounds close to that) occurs. This sound also goes away when i am touching the RCA cable. The RCA cable could be some cheap stuff fitted free of cost by the accessories shop. In my earlier Zen where I was using the same setup, there was whining sound from the speakers whenever i swiched on the AC blower. The accessories shop replaced the RCA cable and the sound was fixed.

Well, here is my setup. Sony MP-50 MP3 player, Sony 222 Amp powering Sony 6x9 speakers on the rear panel and Pioneer 5" in the front doors. I am happy with the quality of the sound except for the quite often buzz and whine.

Please let me know the next step in your troubleshoot. Should i replace the RCA cable?

Geesus Vivek, even I use ferrite core for in car XOs! Air core in a car XO is hardcore besides I dont think the nuances lost from eddy current losses will be noticed in a car enviroment.
