Well RSJ.. the SQ folks on most international forums are touting the P80RS as the best thing done by Pioneer yet... and also put the SQ much higher than the Alpines... In fact during my research I found that a lot of 9855 owners themselves have switched to this and are damn happy. In fact this is being put just under the Clarion DX2 and higher than the Eclipses!

Secondly this HU give you a plethora of tuning options for one to play around with - should one get so inclined/talented..

Thirdly.. I have heard either of them... So major handicap ... Have to go by public opinion..

Lastly Gunbir also recommended this...

The P80 hasn't arrived at the dealer yet, he will let me know as soon as it comes, by next wednesday atleast as tuesday is a business holiday in Noida. I beleive the Kenwood has 24bit burr brown DACs for Left and right channels while p80 has only one. would this affect the sq by any means ?

Burr Brown DACs are not the holy grail. there is lot more to producing good sound from a CD than adding a 24bit BB DAC.

1. Platter stability
2. Filters (there quite a few)
3. Power supply and shielding (just ask Ken Ishiwata)

Kenwood K-CD01 is from the reference line of Kenwood also know as emotion series. Which has limited distribution in Asia and Oceania hence not available in US and Europe.

It has K-Grade Burr Brown DA Convertors (hence K in K-CD01) which is one of the best in the Burr Brown catalog and they are using independent on Left/Right Channels with offset dual differential circuit. It is very good SQ HU without any bells and whistles. No EQ, fancy display, lights, no MP3 (stupidity to play when have Burr Brown DAC's), Detachable face. Just plain CD Player with Bass / Treble.

The Clarion DRZ-9255 is the only other HU which uses K-Grade DA Convertors, dual 24 Bit, 96kHz sampling along with electronic 0.5dB step Burr Brown volume control which is a treat (quality of volume knob also plays a very important role in overall SQ).

There is a big difference in the price of DRZ-9255 and K-CD01. But then Clarion can do much more than Kenwood (Parametric Eq, Time Alignment, Configurable Crossover till 4-way active etc.)

If one wants Front + Rear + Sub setup then Kenwood is a very good option.

The other Kenwood HU's has the following :
XXV-01D - 24 Bit Burr Brown (No K Grade), with offset dual differential in front channels, time alignment.
KAC-8529 / 7529 - 24 Bit Burr Brown (No K-Grade)

Has not yet looked in the newer ones.

If SQ is the only objective and the he / she is serious, then one has to be very careful in choosing equipment and HU is very important component.

Go for P80RS without a doubt. No ways Alpine 9855 can touch P80RS on SQ. I will anyday go for the CD player with better DAC's and i rate Burr Brown as one of the best because other DAC's like Crystal, Wolfson are yet to be used in car audio.
