Ajmats brilliant writeup on his recent highway trip got me all thinking about my experiences in the Vtec...and the one that stands out is that of revving the stormer of an engine beyond 6000 rpm.

My favorite trick is to make a car guy sit next to me, and ask him to guess the upshift point without looking at the rpm gauge...and each and every time people who arent really familiar with the Vtec yell out "NOW" and I reply "Hey look, its 'only' 5500 rpm yet, we still have almost 2000rpm to go" This engine is made to rev, and there is no pleasure in the world that is close to high-revving a well-tuned Vtec. The sound...the adrenalin...the sheer speed and precisely upshifting through the gears is a joy unparalleled by any other.

I never ever keep my windows shut or the music system on when I am in the mood for a spirited drive in the Vtec...Paying attention to the rpm needle climb up at an alarming rate and the car concurrently reaching absolutely shocker speeds will have you addicted for life. Of course, there is always that precise power steering and the delicious gearbox to supplement the Vtec engine.

Most Indian cars dont even revv anywhere as close...for e.g. the Lancer struggles to go beyond 5500 rpm.

Forget the power accessories, forget the alloy wheels...heck forget even the body...I would pay the price of this car for the Vtec engine alone!

*you've been bit by the "VTEC" bug, 'ol' pal

Join the party *

My fav trick is to spin the wheels when shifting from 1st to 2nd and then from 2nd to 3rd.

Ever tried sliding the car? Ofcourse you'll have to hit speeds close to 140 for that.

The Vtec to me is the "Nissan Skyline" of Indian cars. The only thing missing are the "Twin Turbos"

"I am loving it"

Hey M3,

when upshifting from second instead of dropping down the revvs to revvmatch as you shift into third, you keep them at peak power or just above (high rpms) and shift into 3rd and then quickly drop the clutch. Needless to say this puts a decent bit of sudden strain on your drivetrain, and also wheelspins although cool are essentially a loss of traction and hence a waste of power and time......but are fun none the less!

Rehaan

ps - also you need a powerful car / or an o-k car with really bad tires

Dunno about the Cielo man, it just doesn't have enough punch to spin the wheels, especially in 3rd. Maybe a tuned Cielo will be able to do it.

I've driven my cousin's Cielo, it roars alright but the needle just doesn't rise fast enough.

The key is to keep the revvs high and shift, as if your life depended on it. lol

Like Rehaan said, it's just a waste of power and time, but it's fun and will surely help you become a faster shifter.

And about the xhaust, it's not a double but a single. It's just 1 xhaust with 2 outlets.

Dunno if it's for show or maybe it reduces back pressure a teeny weeny bit.

Getting Ichibaan Honda down to their knees can be a complicated task, but accomplished no doubt!! Will let you know as soon as I have some relevant papers in hand.

I know just what you are talking about Shantanu. High-rev shifts from 2nd to 3rd always...always result in a great sounding chirp from the front tyres.

One of the reasons that Honda offered the double-barrel exhaust is to visually distinguish the Vtec from its siblings. Thats the reason the alloys, spoiler and interior touches were thrown in too.

Only the muffler is a double-barrel type, rest of the exhaust system is pretty much stock. A double barrel does result in designing better flow of exhaust gases through the muffler.

I personally don't like diesels when it comes to driving the car. Even if Honda are to bring in their diesel versions, id' still opt for the Petrols for sheer driving pleasure.

They can get common rail injection, mono rail injection, twin rail injection or de-rail injection, it ain't gonna be as good as a petrol.
