most under rated : Palio, Mondeo, Vectra,
most over rated: zen, Lancer, Hyundai cars*

*Not that anything is too wrong with them, but having driven santro, accent and elantra, there is nothing special in them to justify the hype around them. Havnt tried sonata yet. Maybe it is the the marketing campaign that worked out well. Should tell you that Hyundai India has the best marketing team which explains why their cars worked out well in India, compared to other markets.

Mostly agree with you on the Santro part. One more reason in Santro's popularity is that even though it was Suzuki that pioneered the tall boy concept, it was the Koreans who took max. mileage out of it in India, by introducing it first, while the MUL guys were sleeping on their A**. Thus, the Koreans sort of created an impression in the Indian psyche that it was their innovation.

Coming to the Marina, you mentioned 2 reasons for its lack of popularity. 1st being Indians not taking to estates, which is quite true, as evident from disasters like the Tata Estate, Swing, Altura, Weekend, Adventure etc. But then these vehicles are more useful for the Westerners who take off every friday on vacation with loads of luggage, their pets, a couple of cycles mounted behind the car etc. Can't comment on the 2nd reason - not being marketed well - as I don't follow (actually ignore) their efforts.

But, IMO another main reason for it not taking off is the image of Tata as a car manufacturer. Their Indica was a big hit, partly due to cabbies/BPOs taking to it and partly because it was a VFM option for people going for their 1st car and wanted something different and/or diesel powered. They would also be willing to put up with the quality issues that come as part of the package. But in the case of the Indigo/Marina, it is one segment above and people who would be shelling out 5L or more would definitely be looking for snob value and reliability, which is lacking in this product.

Overrated: ALL Honda & Mercedes Benz cars.

Don't get me wrong I love Mercedes to the core and would probably choose most MB cars over BMW/Audi, but what we get in India just isn't to par with Mercedes worldwide and they are already charging a premium. And even after that people are saying ooo the E and C class is great when infact the E class outright sucks and the C is just OK.
