Place of sale is important. MY indica as 40K shaved off because it has Bangalore registeration so no takers in Delhi. It will be cheaper for me to ship it to Bangalore(10K) and i may get the price I am getting now in delhi in bangalore even after 2 years!

Another factor is the original paint fixation.
Got lots of small scratches? Wait before you touch up. A badly scratched car will fetch more than fixed one as people tend to think major accident. One guy concluded on seeing my car since both sides have some paint jobs my car was definately on a roll over. I told him to check out the roof, that convinced him

Absolutely Shan! Doctor-driven, lady-driven and Parsi-owned are all strong points when selling. But sorry to say, a 'petrol' Innova is not!

Another point to note is that certain uncommon options will not fetch anything in resale. For example if you ordered a sunroof+ABS+Airbags+alloys as a 2 lakh option, forget about getting that back during resale because a 2nd hand buyer is a deal seeker who will not go for such features.

@ Steeroid, Octroi i was referring to maharashtra and not kerala, and the city cars are considered better coz they have constant access to authorised service centers and dealers.. and generally people in Kerala never used to prefer small town cars, this was some years back when i was there

That technically means reved engine and fried brakes. It's even worse.

I too have become a believer in a buying a year or 2 old car and keeping it as long as you're happy with it - typically 3-5 yrs.
Also to be considered are the costs of overhauls or major parts replacements. The Marutis and Tatas score high on that - you can *afford* to redo them!

think about a Hyundai Sonata buyer who paid 13L for his car only to be selling it for 4L.
Does resale value really matter fro people who intend on keeping a car for more then 5years?
If you buy a second hand car, that has not been run in properly like a majority of cars out there, you will face problems after 3 years of ownership as it is. With a new car, atleast you have peace of mind. the previous owner who would be selling off his 1 or 2 year old car must have had some sort off problem with it unless he became bankrupt, is shifting or won a lottery and things like these don't happen very easily.
But then again, it is personal choice.

makes sense. I guess its much better to spend on the car I know - it still drives beautifully and is comfy enough on long drives. Still, when you get a new car and people 'brush past' or bang the bumper its hurts way more. Right now I'm in a 'comfort zone' where small blips go unnoticed
Resale value matters only if you sell it
