Default Allison Transmission Inc. opens Manufacturing Facility in Chennai

Allison Transmission, Inc., the premier global provider of commercial and military duty automatic transmissions and hybrid propulsion systems, has opened a new multi-purpose operations facility on the outskirts of Chennai. The new facility spans 203,000 square feet and comprises of the manufacturing plant and regional headquarters.

In addition to being capable of manufacturing vehicular drive train components, the state-of-the-art facility will also serve as the regional headquarters of Allison Transmission India Pvt. Ltd., housing its executive and regional sales offices. The facility also incorporates design features which will allow it to expand quickly as future marketing opportunities develop. Approximately 300 employees are expected to be employed by the facility once it is fully operational.

The facility is designed to be flexible in the products that it is capable of producing, allowing Allison Transmission the ability to respond quickly to changing market opportunities as they develop globally. The plant was also designed with themes of energy efficiency, environmentally clean, and meets the criteria to be classified as a zero discharge facility, a facility that completely recycles all water used from all the plant processes.

Alison intends to expand into the medium and heavy duty bus and truck segments by utilizing their comprehensive product line. Currently, Allison Transmissionís growth in India has been propelled by fitting automatics into low-floor CNG and diesel buses in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Nagpur and other Indian cities.

Couldn't find out the exact outskirts location in Chennai. Google didn't help much other than finding out some press reports dated 29-Jan. Any idea which place this factory has been built?

Thanks for the link mjothi. Again Oragadam? Isn't this the place where Renault-Nissan & BMW have their factories located?

yes. I think the bypass road laid for Chennai is doing wonders and will do more. Add to that the new bridges in Padi junction and the new one coming up in Koyembedu will prove to be a worthy one for these companies and workers.

I already see a good increase in the number of IT companies around Ambattur, Mugappair etc.

Also, the small scale units in Ambattur estate will be a good source for ancillary units. So, logistically also this place has a good advantage.

I believe Oragadam is on the road connection SingaPerumal Kovil (on NH 45) and SriPerumbadur (on NH 4) on SH 57. This is not near Ambattur, Padi nor is served by the Ring road. If at all it would be served is when another ring road is built enclosing the current ring road connecting the areas of Chengalpattu, Sriperambadur, Tiruvellore, Redhills and Ennore. Not sure if it is planned but I remember reading in papers about it.
The BMW factory is in Mahindra World City, an SEZ which is located slightly beyond SingaPerumal Kovil on NH 45 as we move away from the city.

@Mjothi - actually Amattur's oragadam is different, like @DWind says, this is another 50+ Kms away from Chennai towards Sriperambadur. Sorry for the OT.
