Default Excessive vibration - Ashok Leyland 1214

Dear CV Gurus:

Today, I took delivery of a new Ashok Leyland 1214 truck. On my way home from the showroom with the unladen truck, I noticed that the cabin shakes/vibrates excessively even on relatively mild road undulations, definitely more than my Tata LPT 1109 truck. I am concerned for my drivers' comfort. Is this common for AL trucks? This is only my second truck, my first being the Tata 1109.

The showroom driver suggested to me to "reduce the tension" of the front axle leafsprings. Is this advisable to do? Is there any other solution to this problem?

Its obvious I am a newbie in the business, but am an eager learner.

Can you please explain clearly what the showroom driver instructed?

Could'nt get what exactly "loosening the front spring tension" means.

But never loosen the U bolts(connecting the spring with front axle) or spring pins(connecting the spring with chassis mounted brackets)

U bolts should be properly tightened at regular intervals to avoid the spring leaf failure from the center bolts( I can't explain the reason with all the tech terms involved but believe me this a basic principle in suspension design), Loosening the spring pins will be very dangerous and may cause the spring to get disconnected with the chassis. Please don't do such things.

I could'nt find AL 1214 on their website, I guess your vehicle may be one of the variants from "e-comet' platform.

Excessive cabin vibration has nothing to do with springs. Check for any misalignment in the cab mounting position or rubber bush condition at the cab mounting locations.

Apologies for not explaining this in my first post, but "loosening the tension" of the leafsprings means straightening their curvature a little bit, having them sit flatter than they are now.

You dont have to worry about it . When the vehicle is fully loaded and run for a couple of months it will be all right . Remember it is a new vehicle , so the leaf springs are a bit stiff . That will go after you load the vehicle and use it for sometime . Actually you might be adding more "leaf srings " to carry more weight .

Thank you, greatmana2000, for your assurance. I think I got a little carried away with my concerns and was swayed by the showroom driver's opinion. And yes, we did add some extra leaf springs to the first truck.

Check tyre pressure, that is common for all new vehicles to have higher than operating tyre pressures due to transit periods. Dealers/factory often over inflate tyres

Even I am surprised at the AL website not being updated with the 1214 Ecomet. As the showroom GM told me, the 1214 is basically a 1212 Strong with larger tires and consequent higher payload rating of 9.25 tons. I was looking to buy the 1613, but that truck comes only as chassis and cabin and would need body building work. The approved payload rating for both 1214 and 1613 comes to about 9.5 tons, but I am sure the 1613 can tolerate much more overloading than the 1214. Since I have no intention of overloading the truck, I choose to go with the pre-built body 1214.

Do you mean a Tata 1613 or Leyland?? I didnt think ALL had a 1613 anymore after BSIII introduction.

Also if you did mean a Tata 1613, I think all Tata rigids have optional cab available. The 1613 probably has 4 separate variants, ie SFC, SFC Cab, LPT and LPT cab.

Also, about your Ecomet 1214, what is the engine power rating, 120/140hp??

I meant the AL 1616. These similar-sounding nomenclatures are confusing.

The Ecomet 1214 has a 120 HP engine.

An unladen truck definitely tends to vibrate more. That though should be common. But incase you feel its really uncomfortable and think its very high will advise you to check the cab mounting and cab locking.
Anyway try with the load and it should be ok.

Being an owner of a Tata 1109, what made you opt for an Ashok Leyland 1214? Would be nice, if you could highlight why you choose this model among Tata, Eicher11.14 or BharatBenz.

Meanwhile AL1214 is a surprise. Here in Kerala, AL Ecomet 1212 is an hot cake, leading the market share followed by Eicher in the 12T segment. I have not come across any 1214 yet!

First of all..congrats for your new purchase and wish you all the best for a successful business ahead with the new 1214.

The issue is most likely to be from the cabin bush and locks. If the same is checked, the problem might get solved. And also i guess on full load the problem will get erased too.

On a personal note. Please post a pic of your new truck.

Ashokleyland never claims that there is a nomenclature for its product names. There are always difference right from 2214 and 4019 to 1214.
In this regard Tata also has some difference like 1512, 1109 etc
