Indian commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland will foray into the multi-purpose vehicle space come the 16th of July, 2013. The automaker has badge engineered the Nissan Evalia MPV (Also known as the NV200 internationally) to come up with the Stile. Featuring revised styling, the Stile is an Evalia in trendier clothes, as was evident at the MPV's showcasing at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo.

Nissan helped Ashok Leyland develop a mini pick up truck in the form of the Dost. The Ashok Leyland Dost has been a big success for the Indian automaker and the Stile MPV is expected to follow a strategy similar to that adopted with the Dost. The MPV will be sold alongside the Dost, at Ashok Leyland's new crop of dealerships that sell its small commercial vehicle (SCV) range.

The Stile will be priced and positioned below the Evalia to avoid the MPVs overlapping into each others's targeted buyer segments. While the Evalia is predominantly aimed at the family MPV buyer, the Stile will be targeted at cab operators and the delivery van market. Ashok Leyland is expected to outfit the Stile with the 1.5 liter K9K turbo diesel engine, with a five speed manual gearbox as standard.

The state of tune (this engine outputs 85 Bhp-200 Nm on the Evalia) of this frugal and responsive diesel motor will be known on the date of launch. Ashok Leyland is also said to be readying up a CNG powered version of the Stile. targeting urban pockets of India that are seeing a rapid expansion of CNG dispensing infrastructure. A CNG variant could prove to be quite popular with cab operators, especially with the lower running costs such a variant promises.

The CNG variant of the Stile will come with a CNG-Petrol dual fuel engine. The CNG tank will be situated in the boot of the MPV, which also means that the CNG powered model will be a five seater what with the additional two seats at the rear making way for the CNG tank. The Stile will be available in various configurations such as a people mover, panel van and even an ambulance.

Even as the Ashok Leyland Stile's launch impends, Nissan India is readying up a revamped version of the Evalia MPV. The Evalia, which has been a dud seller in the Indian car market, is expected to move away from unconventional-ness by means of the facelift. New features could be added. The styling on the outside and the interior quality on the inside are expected to get revised on the facelifted model.

Stile on the other hand would probably do well - largely due to the segment that it is targeting.

Badge Engineering seem to become a new norm among Indian manufactuers. Though it is different than consolidation which might get into the eyes of CCI if it results in monopoly.

This approach has not resulted in major benifits to any player so far, let's hope Ashok Leyland is able to do something to this Nissan Product by making it available for a segment lower buyers / tour operators.

Ashok Leyland badly needs this launch and badly needs another volume driver after Dost sales have started losing steam in June.

The mainstay heavy CV segment is seeing the kind of slowdown not seen even in 2008/09 crisis period. (As per some of the dealers in the CV business)

The cargo carrier application in this segment is very competitive and Ashok Leyland may have to resort to very very competitive pricing to capture market share.

Hope to see some real improvements in the passenger version of this car compared to the Evalia.

I feel the Pre facelift (Current) Evalia would be Stile and the Facelifted evalia coming up would cater to personal / self use segment.

This is just perfect for Ambulance as Force Traveller is too big for the city roads and Omni is too small for Ambulance.

I hope Ashok Leyland targets the lower end market (taxi) with their version of Evalia.
By the way this MPV is being sold under three different badges and Ashok Leyland would be the 4th one!

Chevrolet City Express
Nissan Evalia
Mitsubishi Delica
Ashok Leyland Stile

This should be a record isn't it?

Come to think of it call it Stile or Evalia, both seem really too similar in terms of looks. This will not really help differentiating both of them when launched or relaunched.

The only thing that may help Ashok Leyland is that since Evalia was a dud, not many people know about it in the mainstream. So the tag of buying a rebadged dud vehicle may not rub on to the Stile.

Nissan should also target the commercial space to get the numbers going since the vehicle just IMO does not really have the looks to sell in the personal segment.

I second this opinion. Evalia from any angle doesn't look like a family car. The only reason I can imagine for Nissan not selling Evalia as a commercial product is maintaining their brand image. But definitely this a good move for both Nissan and Leyland - Leyland enjoying a new market share and Nissan enjoying the royalty !

As per my sources. AL will just "showcase" the production version of the Stile on JUL 16. The actual launch will happen AFTER the updated Evalia is out.

But products like this will only be volume drivers and not necessarily revenue generators. With average selling price close to 20 lks in M &HCV segmentation to SCV will only derisk business in long term.

The Stile was launched on the 16th by Mr Carlos Ghosn, J.P Hinduja and Dheeraj Hinduja,

In addition to the press release content that Jayaprashant has provided, some points that were discussed during the launch

Although it is projected as a separate model, questions from the press made it clear that this was a rebadged Evalia with some frugal engineering inputs from Ashok Leyland

The "D.I.E.T" engine is the Nissan K9K engine in a low state of tune 75PS to ensure better fuel consumption and long term durability under abusive conditions (you all know how cab drivers drive)

Ashok Leyland have 117 strong dealer network for light vehicles. A key reason for the Dost success. This provides an opportunity for Nissan to leverage the network for production volume and indirect market reach.

Pricing will be announced in September
