Default Hybrid vehicles for public transportation: Trials to begin in August 2013

The capital will host the trials for hybrid powered three-wheelers, mini busses and busses from August.

The government apparently, wants to explore the use of alternative fuel based transportation which is expected to come with certain subsidies.

Pilot projects would also follow in other cities and the results would help the government in tweaking the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) which aims to put about 17% of the vehicles on sale in India as electrics/hybrids by the year 2020.

Toyota would be looking to launch the Camry hybrid while Mahindra has confirmed that a Verito EV would be seen next year.

I have seen multi-seater electric vehicles in many temples and railway stations. Such vehicles can replace our auto rickshaws, at least for short travels - will help in reducing air and noise pollution.

That's a good news. Atleast, it will help in reducing air pollution, big time. I feel Auto-rickshaws are converted to CNG's nowadays, however mini-buses and busses in many metros still use the Diesel option. (Some metros do have the CNG busses).

The positioning of cost for these hybrid vehicles will be a challenge, since they are quite costly.
