Default Tata Motors launches Ultra range of trucks

Tata Motors has launched the Ultra range of trucks in the Intermediate and Light Commercial Vehicle (ILCV) segment. The Ultra 812 and Ultra 912 are the two models that have been introduced. They are priced at Rs. 10.53 lakh and Rs. 10.94 lakh (ex-showroom, Chennai) respectively.

The Ultra range comes in many variants with payload capacities ranging between 5 and 15 tonnes and body lengths of 14, 17 and 20 feet. It is available in four body colours - red, white, blue and yellow.

The Ultra range features a hydraulic 45 degree tiltable cabin equipped with suspended seats, dash-mounted gear lever, new instrument cluster, lockable glove box, mobile charging point, bottle holder and provision for HVAC unit.

Ultra trucks get features like tiltable and telescopic steering column, power steering, disc brakes, tubeless radial tyres and head and tail lamps with integrated LEDs.

Both the 812 and 912 are powered by a Tata 497 TCIC diesel engine that produces 125 PS @ 2400 rpm and 400 Nm of torque @ 1300-1500 rpm.

The pic you have posted shows a brown one as well.

What's keeping them from launching the new gen engines (DICOR 3L and 5L) developed specifically for these trucks?

The biggest surprise for me in Ultra trucks are the use of air over hydraulic brakes instead of regular air brakes. Also unlike other models the parking brake chamber is fitted post output flange in GB.

Wouldn't the grill-less bonnet cause overheating?

That's the difference in the system of operation. It can be air or hydraulic or a combination of two. However the best is the air and cheapest is hydraulic. Using air over hydraulic is something in between these two. The system uses air over hydraulic pressure to aid braking.

Tata introduced full air S Cam brakes in its CV range quite late (in late 1990s if I remember correctly) whereas AL CVs came with them even in 1970s.

Some drivers considered air over hydraulic superior on the ground that in case the air brake failed, the hydraulic system would act like a back-up and stop the vehicle.

OT: Isn't that the USP of a compressed air braking system? Brakes are applied if there is a leakage and resulting loss of pressure.

^^^^^^^^
Exactly what I thought: full air S Cam brakes completely lock up when there is loss of air pressure, right?

The front looks like an enlarged version of tue ACE pickup.
On a different note, with the cabin sitting low and likely to be crushed in case of a frontal impact, should airbags be made mandatory in such CVs? Are there any CVs which offer airbags even as an option?

I don't think the cabin sits lower than the existing products in that range. So it shouldn't be a problem.

I meant to say it sits lower than the heavy commercial vehicles and not as compared to other LCVs. Sorry for not clarifying it earlier.

I wish passenger car's should be mandated with air bags and ABS considering the population they are in road. In many cases accidents are always related to CV's no matter how the car's are driven. In my view, passenger car drivers are the most who learn driving without any proper training with few inputs here and there. And they are the One who have limited experience in on road also.
