Scania is all set to open its bus manufacturing plant near Bangalore later this month. The official date for the inauguration is reported as March 30, 2015 in the autocarpro report.

Though the plans for bus manufacturing was laid out as long as October 2013 (when the truck plant was inaugurated), all we could see till now was trial productions. Now the company is all set to roll out buses from its Narasapura plant from end-March.
The existing truck plant has an annual production capacity of 2,500 units while the new bus plant will have capacity to manufacture 1,000 buses a year.

Who will buy 1000 Scanias per year in India? Are they planning any export to Asian countries or Middle east?

That's the plan capacity for the moment and not necessarily the production numbers.
Also as with many other big players, export would definitely be part of their utilization plan. I guess we would get more details on their inauguration function.

With current sales figures of around 50 numbers, the plant is built to cater future requirements, including for city buses.

Why was this company so late to arrive ? They show up 15 years + after Volvo was in India ? In Europe Scania and Volvo are neck to neck competitors.

View of Scania's bus manufacturing facility, with a capacity to produce 1000 buses per year presently. This would be expanded to 2500 buses per annum by end 2017.

That's right. Scania currently sells 200-250 buses in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand markets and intends to serve it from India.

In India the market for Bus is estimated at approx 47000 dominated by TATA and Ashok leyland - close to 83% market.

Volvo after years of efforts have reached around 950 buses a year in India, for Scania to reach there it will take couple or years or maybe more.

I think that with the introduction of city buses in most transport corporations, they would reach this target closer than what we feel. I for one, prefer travelling in a Volvo than Tata or AL city buses. They are efficient, fast and cost only marginally more than rest their fares.

PS: In Mumbai, Volvo fares are less than the purple Cerita buses on specific routes, which are nothing but Junk on wheels!

I would say they should need 1000 Buses a year, looking at Government and intercity private operators. They would easily build the demand for these and there is also a good chunk of fleet operators who would need the same
