Default Daimler India Commercial Vehicles opens new bus plant, unveils new products

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has inaugurated a new bus plant in Oragadum, near Chennai.

The new facility is constructed with an investment of Rs. 425 crore within the existing premises of DICV. It is spread across an area of 27.91 acres and is set up for an initial capacity of 1,500 units which can be further expanded to 4,000 units subsequently. The new bus plant is expected to create 1,300 job opportunities in the state, 300 for DICV and additional 1,000 at Wrightbus International, which has partnered DICV for setting up the plant.

The plant will manufacture and assemble buses under two brands - Mercedes-Benz and BharatBenz. BharatBenz buses will be front-engine and used for short distance travel (school, staff and tourist transportation). The premium segment will be addressed with Mercedes-Benz rear-engine buses for inter-city transportation. The new plant will manufacture buses with gross vehicle weights of 9, 16 and above 16 tons.

After today’s inauguration of the bus facility, the DICV plant is the only Daimler Trucks plant worldwide to produce trucks, buses and engines for three brands - Mercedes-Benz, BharatBenz and FUSO - under one roof. The bus chassis are rolled out from the same assembly line as that of BharatBenz trucks, as they are technologically similar to the medium-duty BharatBenz trucks.

DICV has also unveiled a new range of Mercedes-Benz Buses and BharatBenz Buses along with a new mining truck and a local heavy duty tractor.

The BharatBenz 3143 is a deep mining truck, developed on the existing Daimler Heavy Duty Truck platform with a 4-axle configuration. It is uses an OM 457 Mercedes-Benz engine that puts out 430 HP. It will be available in two variants 19.5 Cu.M rock body and 32 Cu.M coal carrier.

The BharatBenz 4940TT is a tractor that can be used for transporting heavy-lift project cargo such as turbines, heat exchangers, windmill propellers and other industrial equipment. This model will be launched in the market later this year.

DICV has more than 80 dealerships that cover 85% of the Indian market. The buses will be served by the existing dealership network. Daimler Financial Services will also extend financial packages for the bus business.

Wow. Though cant see much in the photo. But whatever part of the bus seen in the pic seems very high quality. Tata motors really needs to upgrade their buses with these quality standards.

Very encouraging to see high quality European commercial vehicles being assembled/built in India and the Germans bringing in more FDI and manufacturing jobs to the country. We have come a long way since the time in 1979/1980 when Tata Motor's (then called TELCO) made some design innovation in their basic 1210 truck which included the bonnet design change they had to take approvals from the bureaucratic worthies in New Delhi and wait one year to get the license to increase production volumes. While there is a lot still to be done to unshackle our manufacturing sector from the tyranny of the factory inspector and labour laws we have come a long way in one generation.

Been here for the show.
Daimler is always a benchmark in product launch. This was no different. Great show that is likely to continue for 2 more days for specific customers.

Good coverage Ashley.

Seems like the Multi axle bus have its cowl inspired from the Mercedez CLS car type grille. Also the same looks far better than its predecessors from Sutlej Body. The game seems to be on and competition is getting tougher with Scania and Volvo side by side. If Mercedez Benz can capitalize this product along with added dealer network and After sales service, they will hit the target.

The LCV looks sheer disappointment in its design. It still has got a long way to go as far the design cues are concerned.

All the best Merc for a grand come back..!!

Actually, Tata made design changes in the original Mercedes truck even in the 1960s. The 1210 model launched in 1964 resulted from improving Daimler's L312 by increasing payload and lowering per-tonne fuel cost. Please do read the article in post no. 1 in this thread:

Agree with you about the onerous license-permit raj but looking at its positive side, the restrictions on imports, FDI and foreign exchange enabled us to build a domestic auto industry. Tata, Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, etc. could never have emerged as major auto manufacturers had their foreign collaborators enjoyed the liberty to set up 100% foreign owned companies in India.

Got a glimpse of the vehicles. Apparently there seems to be a lot of changes in the vehicle from the old multi-axle Merc. It has got a new facelift with the front grille inspired by the AMG series. The vehicle is a 15m coach, which makes it legally the longest possible bus in the segment. The interiors also has been upgraded with a fully flat floor. They showcased a 50-seater bus with the first 3 rows being 2x1 Mega Magnum seats and then 2x2 Magnum seats. It's seems they are trying to make the aircraft style seating layouts as it also had a separator between the two arrangements. Accordingly to them any layout can be accommodated in the vehicle. The vehicle also has a 15 cu.m. luggage space which is absolutely huge. I mean literally you can park bikes in it. Although overall fit and finish was a high concern and not upto the standards these premium vehicles should have.

I heard some of the people saying that they will now provide service through Bharat Benz dealers as well. This is a really positive move, as service was a big concern in their older version and over the past few years they have established their truck dealerships.

Yeah. I'll second you on that. Although the design is better than available vehicles in this segment, it is not something one expects from premium brands like Bharat Benz. Also the finish is not that great either. The only positive takeaway was, the LCV is based on the 9T Fuso canter platform, same as the Bharat Benz trucks, which has already established fuel efficiency and maintenance advantage in the market over Tata, ALL and SML.

But buses are more than trucks. We will only know when we see them perform on the roads.

The biggest change in Multi axle is steerable tag and addition of disc brakes. The length is now 15m and there are no other variants. The coach is still far from perfection - it still doesn't come with hydrostatic cooling system like Volvo and AMT is biggest omission, which definitely will have impact in sales. I dont think Merc can win customer base with this product but still much better than previous generation.

ICV buses were bad interms of fit and finish and leave away Benz it was not to level of Alma and Mungi. Way to Go. With all competition moving towards FOH door, BB just coming with these products with WB door.

Is the multi-axle bus based on a Wrightbus body? I see a Wrightbus monogram to the left of the LHS wiper. Does Wrightbus have any production facility in India?

Yes, all the buses being manufactured here in India will come with WrightBus body. They do have their manufacturing facility in DICV, Chennai only.

Cover story in MotorIndia - June issue.

All the micro level details captured in the article; it does mention all the models going for sale in early Q4 2015.

Body will be all aluminium type manufactured by 'WrightBus India' a reputed body builder originated at Northern Ireland, UK.

The bus looks fresh compared to Volvo.

Any updates on the pricing, is it lesser than Volvo, considering the vehicle is almost localised.

I thought the only reason Bharat Benz was made was to not ruin the status and image conscious Indian buyer's feeling of buying a luxury car only to see a bus or truck on the highway hold the same logo.

Now they're selling buses as regular MB products with a big MB logo ? Then what was the entire point of the Bharat Benz brand and creation ?

So, if you see the images, Mercedes badging is done for premium buses comparable to Volvos and Scanias. Whereas the regular BB badging is for buses which will be not-so-premium. Sensible and sound strategy, even now.
