Default Report & Pics: T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship @ Buddh, March 2016

The third season of the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship was held at the Buddh International Circuit on March 19 and 20, 2016.

Report & Pics: T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship @ Buddh, March 2016-_dsc0018-custom.jpg

Motorsport is still in its infancy in India. Despite all odds, Tata Motors took a leap and introduced truck racing using modified versions of their flagship Prima trucks in 2014. The event features on the calendars of the FIA and FMSCI each year. The first two seasons saw the participation of drivers from the BTRA (British Truck Racing Association). The BTRA is instrumental in selecting the best drivers from the British and European truck racing championships.

Here's how the event evolved year on year:

Season 1:
  • 25,000+ spectators.
  • 1,000+ Indian truck drivers attend race day.
  • 30 Indian and 20 International dealers attend.
  • 22 safety modifications to the production Prima truck to make it race-worthy.

Season 2:
  • 50,000+ spectators.
  • 5,000+ Indian truck drivers attend race day.
  • Presence of 60 Indian and 200 International Tata Motors dealers.
  • Prima truck becomes 10% lighter, 10% faster and produces 10% more power vs the 2014 truck.
  • Styling changes to the truck.

Season 3 had a new introduction - Tata Motors in association with Motorsports Management (MoMa) and Accenture, decided to handpick Indian truck drivers and groom them for truck racing. This was a unique concept and had never been done before for a profession that is marred by social stigma.

Tata Motors decided to change the perception of trucking as a profession, by making it more aspirational. It achieves great customer engagement as you can see from the presence of dealers at races. It is also aimed at motivating drivers towards trucking as a profession to address the shortage of drivers. The race also offers a life changing opportunity for truck drivers by developing them into professional racers. Additionally, Tata gets to showcase technological advancements in its flagship product.

The Tata Prima 4038.S is the base truck used to compete in the championship. 2016 saw a host of modifications to the truck. The power output went up to 370 BHP @ 2,100 rpm, enabling the trucks to go past 130 km/h. Other key modifications included a reduced center of gravity (by 100 mm) to improve the driving dynamics. Adjustable front and rear racing shocks were added to improve cornering stability. An anti-roll bar was introduced in the suspension system.

Drivers

The Indian driver selection process for 2016 was quite intensive. There is a big difference between truck driving as a profession and being a race truck driver. The latter requires a different skill set and temperament altogether. Tata Motors sent out the requirements across 200 of their key accounts to seek nominations. There was no set criteria for filtering initial requests, after which, the 500+ nominations that were received would be shortlisted. Out of the 500+ nominations, 147 were selected to be put through the T1 racing program to further filter down the shortlisted drivers.

The T1 Racing Program (TRP) was then introduced for the nominees to go through. The TRP program included 4 levels, sub-divided below:

Level 1: 2 days - 132 drivers shortlisted.
Level 2: 1 day - 64 drivers nominated.
Level 3: 4 days - 23 racers from Level 2.
Level 4: 8 days - 17 semi-finalists.

Level 1 & 3 involved a classroom program involving medical and physical fitness requirements and race craft classroom training. The program ensured race readiness and helped imbibe racing theory via white-board sessions.

Level 2 and 4 involved on-track evaluations using Tata's fleet products comprising of the Xenon, Ultra and Prima on the Madras Motorsport track. This involved instructor led training as well as solo driving evaluations. On track evaluation was finally done on multiple parameters and drivers were eventually selected using lap times and consistency in driver performance.

What emerged were 12 finalists and some reserved drivers to race at the championship:

A look at the international drivers:
Report & Pics: T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship @ Buddh, March 2016-image-2-custom.jpg

The Indian driver units were split across multiple pit garages. The international drivers had their own sponsored teams from Castrol, Cummins, Wabco, Tata Technologies, Tata Motor finance and the two dealer teams - Dealer Daredevils and Dealer Warriors:

Race 1:
Report & Pics: T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship @ Buddh, March 2016-qualifying.jpg

The qualifying session on Saturday saw Jagat Singh taking pole position, closely followed by Malkeet and Rabinder to make the top three contenders.

The race saw Rabinder hit a front runner and go off the track momentarily. Rajkumar, who had qualified on P4 made the most of the opportunity and opened up his chances for a podium finish. Jagat meanwhile, opened up a long lead and remained unbeaten in the entire run. Rabinder meanwhile, moved to P5 and MD Parvez gained a position up to P4. Rajkumar closed in to P2 position-runner Malkeet and stayed close on his heels, but alas, couldn't make that long standing move to get to P2.

The qualifying session put team Cummins on P1 and P3, while team Castrol and Tata Technologies stayed on P2 and P4.

At the end of lap 1, Graham Powell of team Castrol managed to chase down P1 contender Rick Collett. Luckily, I managed to get some action shots of the entire chase and overtaking maneuver!

Slowly down the order, Mat Summerfield took advantage when David Jenkins ran wide around the last corner. I saw some real wheel to wheel racing of trucks that set the crowds roaring and jumping off their seats as the two trucks went head to head on the long straight on the Buddh International circuit. The end result saw Mat get an edge over David to gain P3. Further down the race, Mat managed to pull closer to teammate Rick and get to P2 in the final standings.

Race 3 was a little close to my heart. Especially after seeing the audio-visuals from the driver selection process, I wanted Nagarjuna to get a P1 position. This was one of those moments when you pick a favorite driver in no time. However, he had qualified on P2 on the grid and had a daunting task to set the pace for the race.

As the race was flagged off, Nagarjuna made a move on race leader Bhag Chand at turn 1 itself. He held the line firmly and just whizzed past Bhag Chand. Things did not settle there, his truck fiercely started pulling away from the rest of the pack as if he had some extra shots of power on tap.

His race lead remained unchallenged thereafter, as he took corner upon corner and zoomed past the start-finish line. A small celebratory slalom push ensued showing the excitement inside the cabin. Secretly, I was cheering out loud for an absolutely dominating win.

I rushed down to the pit lane to take some pictures of the celebrations inside the team garage. It sure was quite an emotional moment for Nagi as his fellow team mates called upon him waving and cheering with celebratory high fives:

In case you wondered why water cooling was required for the brakes - couldn't capture the steam quite well, but there was some serious heat generated out of those big brakes:

While the others celebrated, the JK Tyre team continued to monitor tyre performance and measured temperature readings from all the trucks:

I know a few people who attended the event. Their feedback was fairly good. Can anyone from Team-bhp arrange for passes for the next year. Would be a good place to do the team-bhp meet

The initiative to involve Indian drivers is very good.

I think you missed this (The Giveaway Thread: Post up anything you want to give away FREE to a fellow BHPian) post by SS-Traveller. He had grandstand passes to give away.

I had driven down to Delhi from Kolkata on 19th & our very own SST had informed me about the grandstand passes he had, so we decided to pay a visit on thee Race day. The event had the following itinerary.

Report & Pics: T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship @ Buddh, March 2016-img_9811.jpg

We reached at 1215 hrs. The thing that I didn't really like was that the actual races started around 1400 hrs. The first 1.5 to 2 hrs seemed more like a cultural program. But the races were worth it. The Indian drivers performed very well. From the stands it felt like the trucks that the Indian drivers were driving were either detuned or rev limited. Their speed perceived was lesser than the ones driven by International drivers. These are few pics.

Got a chance to attend the race. Must say I am really impressed with the way Tata has done the whole thing. Finding and training drivers is a huge task and an expensive one at that. The best part is that even after not being professional racers, the Indian drivers were very close to the British drivers who are professional racers. Those who think truck racing would be boring, you couldn't be more wrong! It is very, very interesting. The exhaust note of these trucks is amazing. The way drivers tackle every corner is a sight to behold.

Here are some of the pictures I clicked. Luckily, got a chance to walk around the track and see the race from various corners. Must say it was a bit scary standing right behind the barriers

Trucks lined up at the grid before the start of the race.

Remarkable.

It would have been great if we could have rest of the Indian manufacturers like AL, Eicher, Mahindra also get involved in the same. And call it some Indian TI championship.

Thanks for the coverage. These things look proper scary on the curves! Do they have any counter weight at the back to balance out some of the front heaviness?

Really glad to see Indian drivers getting a go!
