The Govt. had those wonderful rural engineering marvels scrapped for the benifit of multinational players, who are doing nothing but the same thing, only in a posh and massive scale. I am told that some of the bid diesel autorickshaws use more or less the same lambordini engines ones used by these 'crude' vehicles.

I can still remember the Phatpatiya ride distinctly. We visited Delhi sometime in the 80's when I was a kid, and one of the must-do things for us was a Phatpatiya ride. It was an awesome experience. The Rider was a Sardar and for us South Indians, that increased the novelty factor
