Default Tata Motors introduces Magic and Winger

Tata Motors introduces Magic and Winger
To create new segments in urban and rural passenger transportation,
Changing the way people travel

[SIZE=3]Tata Motors today announced the launch of a new product range - the Magic and the Winger – in yet another major initiative to change the way people in India travel. The Magic, developed on the platform of the stupendously successful Ace, now brings to urban and rural areas a comfortable, safe, four-wheeler public transportation mode. The Winger range, India’s only maxi-van, offers a perfect blend of the comfort of a car with the spaciousness of a bus for intra-city and long-distance transportation needs.

Both the Magic and the Winger are being launched nation-wide, starting with Maharashtra and Gujarat, and will be extended to other parts of the country in due course. The two vehicles will create new segments, and in a complementary manner help cover the entire spectrum of customer needs in mass transportation from the very rural interiors to cities as well as the top-end luxury mass transportation segment.

Commenting on the launches, the Executive Director of Tata Motors Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Mr. P.M. Telang, said, “Tata Motors has always been at the forefront with its commitment to offer transportation solutions which will change the way India travels. The Magic and the Winger are our latest initiatives in that direction, and more will follow. They combine Tata Motors’ traditional engineering excellence with strong customer orientation. We are very hopeful that, in their respective spaces, they will deliver the same success as we have had with our market leading range of commercial and passenger vehicles.”

Magic
With an ergonomically designed all-steel cabin, Magic has a flexible seating capacity of 4 to 7 passengers, in pleasant and spacious interiors including comfortable seats and ample legroom for an enjoyable ride for the passengers.

Powered by a 16 HP 700 cc water-cooled diesel engine, it will provide the Magic owner with high fuel efficiency and very low maintenance. The 12” tyres provide higher ground clearance, and the rigid front axle can weather tough road conditions. The turning radius of 4.3 metres is agile enough to navigate narrow bylanes and dense traffic. For the driver’s benefit, the Magic has a clearly visible instrument cluster, utility tray and a digital clock in the dashboard and also a radio fitment provision.

The Magic meets BS-III emission norms and has been developed for use in any market -- be it urban, semi-urban or rural. It is backed by a 36000 km/12-month warranty.

The Magic range is at Rs.2.60 lakhs (ex-showroom Pune).

Winger
The Winger seats 9 to13 passengers, with generous saloon space, spacious head and legroom and wide luggage space. Passenger comfort has been further enhanced with all front-facing seats, each with magazine pockets, bottle holders, spot lamps and grab handles, besides a music system. The fully enclosed body, uniquely placed fuel tank, seat belt for every seat, child lock, fog lamps and a demister (compartment ventilation fan) provide complete safety. The robust and rugged suspension ensures both ride comfort and load carrying capacity, while the monocoque design minimises NVH. The Winger is powered by a 2-litre turbo charged diesel engine.

The Winger’s versatility allows it to be deployed for both long-distance transportation across different terrains in all weathers and also intra-city needs and adaptation for staff vehicles, hotel and airport transfers, tourist usage, ambulance, and school van among others.

The Winger has 11 variants, in three levels of comfort -- standard, deluxe and luxury -- meeting BS-III emission norms and backed with a 1.5 lakh km/18-month warranty.

The Winger range starts at Rs.4.70 lakhs (ex-showroom Pune).

Magic looks set for the rural and semi-urban markets. I do not think it will go beyond that. Its looks too rudimentary IMO. A 16HP, 700cc engine to carry 7 passengers?! Uh... excuse me but that really sounds like a 4-wheeled replacement for those rural phatts. It will be one laborious journey for its passengers.

However it is the Winger that looks interesting. I have a feeling that Tata is out to try its 407 trick all over again; this time in passenger carriers space. Tatas look decidedly more guarded in releasing the specs for this vehicle. It says that the vehicle runs a 2liters TC engine. Nothing more than that. The max passengers it can carry is 13. Hmmm... with all those amenities (seat belts for everyone, bottle holders, music system etc) Tatas are trying to provide a cheaper alternative to the Innova and probably a better looking and cheaper to run solution than the Verna. Looking at the features like child lock, bottle holders, magazine pockets, spot lamps I have a feeling that they are also targetting the individual buyers with large families who want a cheaper alternative to a Toyota.

Also, the 11 variants of the Winger sounds mind-bogglingly high!

Well, it is the same old engine from the Sumo doing its duties in there. I have serious doubts about the power of the engine to tug a 13 seater. With the vehicle packed to a full capacity, whether it will be able to pull the load?

No doubt this vehicle will be lapped up by the call-centre cabbies the moment it is launched..

they can very well gear the engine (2.0 L , 90bhp) to take the load of 13 people. They arent aiming to make a racer here, even if the winger cruises at 90-95 , it will be good enough.
The 3.0L TATA engine used on the 407 can take tons of load, this being a 2.0L, if they tune and work on the ratios, can work very well on the winger. Using an engine already in production also helps to keep the costs low.
The first version sumo had a 68bhp non turbo 2.0L engine and even with 7-8 people, the sumo could hold 90 all day long. In the winger, a turbo version with 22 more horses will easily hold 95-100 all day long with 10-13 people on board.

Ofcourse it will no way be as fast as a qualis/innova, but remember, it priced 2-3 lacs less

Are you referring to the Voyager? The ones which are still used by DHL guys...they were nice. Just that the market wasn't mature enough then...

Ahh..cheaper to run solution than the Verna?? Seriously, I hope Tata can use this "Magic" trick to wipe the Force Minidor auto's off the face of this earth !! 2.6 l seems a bit steep though.. how much do those Minidors cost?

Also noticed that there isnt a rear door on the RHS of the Magic.. this is a good thing.. prevents pple from getting down on the wrong side, right in front of a passing vehicle.

No no... very sorry. I did not mean Verna. I was talking about Winger giving a competition to the Maruti Versa (bloody they all sound so similar and even spelt so alike )... Versa also came in with the same pretext but never made it in the market. Its looks never made it a hit with the individual buyers and the petrol only option meant the Taxi trade also gave it a heave-ho.

Winger at 4.7l or so will mean a very lucrative deal for the Taxi tread. Not to speak of those corporate buses for its executives and individuals who look at an Innova diesel longingly but can not afford a high cost option such as that. Of course no one "looks" at a Versa any more (if it is still available, that is).

The Magic looks like an Ace truck with a tarp thrown over the bed.
