Am now seeing a few SLF buses from Tata, in BMTC under JnNURM scheme. The light-blue hued ones. They differ from the regular 1512c(?), in that the front wheels have a large hub, with the bolts being present just within the outer rim section and a concave surface inside, like in the Volvo's. Any idea what this model is?
Is it a 1618 SLF? BMTC gets Tata Marcopolo bus and Tata 1618 SLF bus - AUTOPEDIA

The difference between the newer LF Starbusses and the earlier LF Starbusses is that the earlier ones had rear mounted engine, whereas the newer ones have it in front, just like a few SLF AL's that were put to the road alongwith them.

These busses are plying under the WBSTC (WB Surface Transport Corporation) umbrella
Arguably these are not LF rather than SLF as the floor height will be 860 mm (Entry+2 steps) for front engined buses and 630mm (Entry+1 step) for rear engined buses.
For LF( the floor height is 390 mm (E+0)

Do anyone of you has the details of body builders for these buses.
AL has chosen and approved many body builders for JNurm project depending upon the locations and volumes they can handle.
The only thing common between these buses are the headlights sourced from AL's NewGen cabs.

There are two different speculations running as who has won the max order under JNnurm project.
I meant as two different since from the AL news room its been declared they have received orders close to 10000. But from Tata there is no declared numbers or atleast I am not aware.
This will also help us to have an overall look.

Default Jnnurm

During July-Aug2009, Tata Motors was leading with majority share in JNNURM orders. But now, its Ashok Leyland with nearly 5200 bus order in hand. KeSRTC, MTC/TNSTC, KaSRTC Mysore, BEST etc has picked majority Leyland buses.
A larger share of AL orders is for its VikingSLF it seems. Also Rajastan, AP, Maharashtra has ordered for DTC type ULE buses from AL.
TML has received good response in north, with likes of UPSRTC, DTC etc. It seems newely launched 1618SLF (12M bus) has also been received well by BMTC, WBSTC, APSRTC, AJL etc. Meanwhile ACGL is bring SLF for BMTC with new designed front.

All leading body builders like Veera Vahana, Harsha, ACGL, Antony Garage, KMS etc have their share in Jnnurm orders.

Default Kerala Jnnurm

KeSRTC is expected to start operation of Jnnurm buses from Nov 1st 2009. The Volvos (15) are ready, but not sure about Leyland buses.
Initially these buses would start running in Trivandrum city. No decision has been made yet, about starting these in Cochin. The public transport in cochin is fully under the control of private operators and KeSRTC has no share.
It seems that AL buses would be similar to the ones in WBengal.

The JNNURM buses were initially supposed to be launched simultaneously at Trivandrum and Kochi. Unfortunately, a rift between KeSRTC and Corporation of Cochin - plus the model code of conduct imposed in the city - has forced KeSRTC to shift all buses to Trivandrum.

Recent news paper reports suggest that 15 Volvos, and some non-AC buses, would be flagged off at Trivandrum.

The inauguration in Kochi is tentatively kept for December 01 - subject to the rift settling down, and both parties reaching an agreement over routes, staffing pattern and fare stages.

Default New SWARAJ MAZDA Busses

Found these on the SWARAJ MAZDA website.

They are fully built ready to use busses with all the bells and whistles, available off the shelf.

Wonder how much they are priced at

Common features
  • Air conditioning - driven by the engine
  • Push back seats
  • ICE

Default SWARAJ MAZDA - Viable business proposition

Do you think this would work?

The SWARAJ MAZDA bus.
  • It comes readily built, so can start earning from day 1
  • It's got only 18 seats but is as comfortable as a normal bus, so its easier to have full occupancy and optimum profitability
  • It's got almost VOLVO like features, air-conditioning as standard
  • Can be run between a small town and a metro like Bangalore.
  • If its 400 kms one way, can do 1 round trip daily
  • Faster on the road than normal big busses
Wonder what the EMI would be like?
Wonder what the running costs are, and the profitability margin is - considering the fact that the ticket would be priced equal to a SRTC luxury bus ticket.

The advantages it has over SRTC is, its faster, its got air-conditioning and DVD, its got style.

Its going to be a one man show. Owner driven, no extra crew, lovingly maintained, no crew salary (and related trouble) etc.

Imagine turning an entreprenueur and earning as much as earning a salary and doing the thing one loves - Driving

Probably sourced from a different builder. Anyways, good to see a few new Tata's in BMTC. They have been a long time coming. If i'm not mistaken, there have been very few/none in the "FA" series, and they are being seen only in these past few months.
Saw a few of these chassis along Mysore Road, being driven to B'lore early this week. The air suspension does seem to do it's job well on an unladen/bare chassis as well. What used to be a pitchy ride earlier, now looks to be a smooth one.

If you are referring to the SLF buses (by TATA or AL ) , then i think there are no SLF buses in FA series. BMTC has been using the KA -01 F- 4XXX numbering system for SLF buses.

But if you are talking of only TATA buses (normal ones) , then there are many buses in FA series.

Default JNNURM buses of BEST

The JNNURM non AC buses of BEST have started running on the roads. Currently they are based at Santacruz depot. Can someone from that area please try and get some photos of it?

Default Exclusive Leyland RE - Jnnurm KeSRTC

The first pictures of Ashok Leyland Rear Engine Low Floor (1 step entry) non a/c bus for KeSRTC under Jnnurm. The body design is similar to the DTC ULE and is built by VEERA Vahana, Bangalore. It has a manual transmission, probably 165HP Hino BS3 engine, front & rear air suspension. I guss its based on the "Panther" chassis.
Other features include, electronic display boards, pneumatic doors etc.
The colour is good but the fit & finish is poor. The interior panneling could have been FRP and the flooring Vinyl type.
Its seems Veera tried to pack a panther chassis under BMTC Suvarna body with front design from AL DTC Foton series!!!

Thanks a lot for the scoop. This bus is based on a new chassis developed by Ashok Leyland - this one is 12M in length, compared to 10.8M of Panther. I believe the engine is the higher hp version from Hino (heard it would be a 230hp engine).

Interestingly, the features you mentioned are 'compulsory' for JNNURM deals. I think it was a better decision to go with metal finish, than those ugly FRP ones. The FRP ones tend to get dirty quicker, and are pretty flimsy.

Can't comment on the finish until I get to see it in person. Veera usually makes good bodies - but you never know the kind of pressure they were under to deliver these buses to KSRTC.

The body design is the standard design being used these days by Ashok Leyland. The Suvarna body has a different shape of windows (in terms of dimensions).
