Not just the MTC. ALL cities deserve a/c buses which are prompt, clean, frequent, on time and most importantly, uncrowded.

I have serious doubts that commuters ever care about the brand.

And oh. the Volvo name - IMHO, what people care for is the comfort and speed, and not just the name.

That is news, ACGL started to make buses on AL chasis? Being a TM promoted company, for most part they used only Tata chasis. Do you have pictures of this bus?
ACGL do make buses on leyland chassis for private indivisuals.(difference being tata bus bodies are welded to the chassis whereas for AL u bolts are used).also ACGL had designed MiniBuses for Eicher

I even have the same feeling. What matters to me if I travel by B7R or B9R. The later command premium over the former.
In Chennai-Blore route Cost of ticket in B7R is 630 and in B9R is 660. This is highly not acceptable.

Its been advertised as Volvo Multi Axle commanding a high travel cost.s
I dont know why even public dont protest this. The ppl who enjoy are the travel operators.

I seriously doubt those Volvos do they really deserve those extra cost. The The cost increse is purely a techno commercial reasons like Rear engine configurtion and poor localisation on power train components.
The biggest Joke is Volvo says they are the only brand who enjoys as a Niche brand in India. I feel there is no room for Niche Players in public transportation sector.

Its becoming a social problem that the cost of transportation sector is rising due to these kind of poor positioning of products and further public is being penalised for this.

last week in Goa i happen to see JNNURM buses of EIcher make they were mini buses

Also had to travel from Kundapur to Trichur by Sri Durgamba AL bus 12 mtr coach devoid of air suspension but the bus did amazing speeds...abs amazing from Mahi at 1.00 am to trichur by 4.30 am was too good.

On good roads inside kerala the bus did amazing speeds almost on 100 constantly and grt control as well.
I spoke to the drive once i got down and he told me the AL buses are better to drive and are in control at high speeds as he had driven a volvo before...the thrill and joy of driving for him was India make buses ....a pure passionate driver

FYI. Goa missed the JNNURM bus - literally. Our government was too busy making money out of land deals that they forgot to send their plan to the Central Government to get grant under JNNURM Scheme.

The buses you saw were probably headed to some other state.

Here is more info from the official press release

Tata Motors begins distribution of Prima World truck

Mumbai, November 4, 2009: Tata Motors has begun distribution of its Prima range of World Trucks, which was unveiled in May this year.

The first product, the Prima 4028 S, is a 40-tonne 266-PS (Cummins ISBE engine) tractor with a 9-speed ZF transmission, and a matching trailer with new generation brakes, ABS and specialised axles for heavy duty and high speed application. The 4028 S tractor-trailer is ideal for carrying freight, like steel, cement, and containers, up to 40.2 tonnes of Gross Combination Weight.

The tractor’s spacious air-conditioned cabin includes reclining seats, adjustable steering wheels, arm rests for driver comfort. It has got sleepers to facilitate long-distance travel. These features are designed to induce longer and more trips. Global Positioning System for vehicle tracking is a standard fitment.

The driving comforts enable the vehicle to operate non-stop for long hours and cover over 700 kms each day thereby offering faster turnaround.

The distribution has begun with select customers in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi & West Bengal. Driving crew of these customers have been trained at Tata Motors’ manufacturing facility in Jamshedpur. The company has already equipped its countrywide service network to support the Prima range.

The Prima 4028 S tractor has been priced at Rs.21 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi), and that with the trailer is Rs.31 lakhs.

The 4028 S tractor-trailer will be followed during the course of the financial year with three other products – two 49-tonne tractor-trailers and a 31-tonne tipper in key segments and routes. They are all BS-III and BS-IV compliant.

The Prima range comprises about 10 major variants of multi-axle trucks, tractor-trailers, tippers, mixers and special application vehicles. The range has been jointly developed by Tata Motors and its two subsidiaries, Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company in South Korea and the Tata Motors European Technical Centre plc in the UK. The company has harnessed the best of inputs and technologies – in styling, engines, transmission, suspension, chassis frames, fabrication and dies -- from partners based in countries like Italy, Germany, Sweden, the US, Japan and South Korea. The distribution of the range will be completed in phases over 2 years.

The truck looks very international. But the design seems to be carried over from MAN/Scania.

10 lakh for a trailer seems to be a high price when comparing with truck which cost 21 lakhs.
The truck also shares some design cues from Volvo too

I too thought the same thing when I first saw it.

It really looks odd.

They could have at least kept those original openings with dummy glass without a bulb (or provision to fit one). At least during the day it would look decent.

I saw one of these, again, the other day (sorry, no pic). And for the better, the operator of this truck had the headlamps installed at this dummy location too.

Default AL - Nissan JV

The 50:50 JV between AL and Nissan to make Light Commercial Vehicles which was earlier planned for an Investment of $500 million has now been stepped down to half.
The JV is planing to use the AL's Hosur - Unit 2 facility to make these vehicles. The product is planned for a roll off by 2011 with a initial capacity of 3000 nos and later to ramp up production upto 39000.

Hosur Unit 2 is the only facility in AL which involves in the manufactring of Cabs. It has an integrated Bodyshop, Paint Shop and Trim shop. So its no surprise that this plant is chosen.

Its also been agreed to make another product form Renault - Nissan facilty in Oragadam, Chennai. The Product is under going major face lift and will be getting a new engine as well.

If the product is positioned in a right place I am sure that should give a tough competetion as to M&M Maxx Pick up, TML 207 DI etc.

Its no surprise they are designed by Stile Bertone, an independent company operating in the sector of Transportation Design, working in the areas of style, engineering, model making from Italy.

Have not seen pictures of JNNURM mini/midi buses, Since you spotted it in Goa, There is a good chance that they are made by ACGL in Goa or Tata Marcopolo in Dharwad.

Which states order mini buses under JNNURM?, KerRTC ordered few for Kochi. I heard KerRTC had a touch time with Either mini buses in the past. So probably these are not for Kochi, but who knows these decision makers got very short memory. UP, Bengal?

I have no clue. Goa didn't get any grant under JNNURM so we wont see any buses with that plastered on the sides running around there.

Goa does have a couple of Bus Body Builders - ACGL and Prakash/Damodar (either one of them, not sure).
