Saw this tractor-trailer by Ashok Leyland in Chennai. Has the era of big rigs finally arrived in India?.

@nickatnite, this Bedford tractor-trailer bus dates back to 1947, when we got independence. The pic was kindly posted by agspins

OT. The Mysore Kingdom -- a princely state in British India, became the "State of Mysore" in November 1956, with the passing of the States Reorganisation Act. In 1973, when I completed high school, the State of Mysore was renamed "Karnataka".

Great looking vehicle and will make for a neat RV too. India did have some neat vehicles till the early sixties and then i don't know what happened. Thankfully, we're getting back to the days.

There are no Merc buses operating on any "south-bound" routes from Bangalore. KSRTC is also operating (or was operating) on the Bangalore-Mysore route. The Volvos are doing a much much better job down in Kerala

The Chassis and Engine are currently imported. The body is built by Sutlej, at Punjab.

Been seeing some of these oversized trailers on the Pune-Bangalore bypass highway these days.

This is a very interesting video of the same type :

Few more of the oversized loads :

This ones tricky! But a very interesting watch indeed :

I guess there are a few more vids of this type if you look around youtube.

Spotted , what I would like to believe, an Hino 6x4 tipper today. It was all white in colour, and looked quite heavy duty. If it is as flawlessly dependable like Toyota's smaller offerings, the Tata and AL better run for cover. (Though I dont want it to happen!).
I just knew about them making an announcement, didnt know the launch had already taken place.

Saw 3 new B7RLE's branded as "Mysore Nagara Saarige" drive towards Mysore, this evening. Funded by JnNURM, and they sport the same red colour as in BMTC Vajra's. The visual difference is these buses have two white stripes along the body, and owned by KSRTC.

Default MSRTC Tata Hispano Globus

MSRTC operates limited number of Tata Hispano buses[ pictured in Pune], the so called 'Volvo competitor'. But the interesting thing is it is not part of the "Shivneri" fleet. Shivneri fleet consists of Volvo, Cerita and Mercidez Benz. So even if Indian makers like Tata and AL make buses on par with the foreign brands in terms features and quality, Operators may not buy them thinking customers may not be willing to pay a premium.

I have seen people complain many times, the local makers [Tata, AL] do not make high powered buses etc, the simple reason the prices of these buses will go up and nobody will pay the high price for a Tata or AL bus. In my opinion Kinglong is a winner here, as the price is comparatively less, [close to Hispano Globus] but still the operator could command a premium. [Shiveni ticket charge is the same for Cerita and Merc Benz]. It will be interesting to see where Mahindra and Man position their buses eventually. Tata/AL, leave the uppder end to the multinationals to fight it out, but innovate at the lower end and provide cheaper transportation to the masses.

Seen two Volvos broke down at NH 212 - Wayanad Ghat section. The first Volvo seems to have some serious problem like clutch or gear box failure. My dad told me that its there in the same place for last two days.

The AL Hippo 6x4 trailer with a huge crane was also broke down, but it was on NH 17 in between before reaching Calicut University while coming from Cochin.

Saw a trailer truck from Ashok Leyland on the Benagenahalli Fly over. It had clear lens headlamps with projectors I think.

Wondering which model is this?

Sorry could not click pics as I was riding my 2 wheeler and was running a lil late to office
