We happened to meet the person behind such inspirational body building. Check the "Rendevous at Pondicherry" thread for more details. He lives in cuddalore.

Here in Mumbai have seen Volgos and as a matter of fact some of the opertors have created a new category called Volgo! Hats of to Volvo and yes i agree Volvo has changed the outlook on long distance bus journeys.
Lets see how many variants, the new Mercedes buses would have on the Indian roads.

Quite common all over India I believe. My father once showed me a Volvo which did not even look like the one posted & had Volvo printed in Big fonts & was probably half as big as a Volvo

I read an article some time back, i think it was in the papers, on how to recognize a fake volvo. Some of the points were:
1. A real volvo's windows can not be opened. they are sealed.
2. A real volvo's engine is at the rear (Duh!)
3. To recognize point 2 above, the back of the bus will have slits to let the engine heat out.
I found this bus picture in KPN site (:: KPN Travels (P) Ltd., ::), it satisfies all the above mentioned points, but it is not a Volvo!!!

In the pic of first post it is written as "Just Like Volvo". Owner himself admitting that it is like of Volvo but not original Volvo. This very common throughout in India to write at the back of bus Volvo. They just try to fool the villagers, not much knowledgeable people, illiterate people.

But the difference is very clear. The best recognition is tires of Volvo it is bigger than ordinary tires, and head light pattern, steering column and above all engine noise. Also Volvo buses are longer than Tata or Leyland buses.

-Enjoy-

May be we are missing the fine print - the "just like" part. May be they are positioning these buses as poor man's Volvo

Yup, it is a RE Leyland. Have travelled in that many times.
@Jomz, Why weren't the AL RE buses popular ? I really liked them. There were a few running in the city as well.

Hmmm maintanance issues.. THe engine, Gearbox, differential, propshaft all are packed into an area 1/4 th of what it used to be. Before all those were spread throughout the bus. THe mechanics have difficulties in accessing all those. If a fleet owners mechanic says it is difficult to service, the vehicle kinda gets unpopular.

THen again the drivers don't like it because they don't get a feel of the engine while driving. THey want the sound of the engine in the cabin and they shift based on the engine sounds. the engine being so far away they miss it.

It is hard to change the regular trucker/bus driver.
