Like Nissan1180 mentioned I too agree about the autos and bikers. They are getting rowdier by the day. However, I would be hesitant to agree to your views about the skills of a taxi driver. Try spotting a taxi without a dent. It will be very difficult. Also they drive like a 'gentleman' because they donot have much option with 30 bhp, 2000 kg car. Yellow cabs are have the worst attitude and they write No Refusal across their cabs and they refuse 99% of the times. That is exactly the reason why Uber says their biggest market after US is Kolkata. The bad attitude of these cab drivers has what made Uber and Ola so famous here.

Since childhood, I have always known and seen Hindistan Motors Ambassador dominated the taxi culture in Kolkata. But now Maruti Dezires and Tata Indigos are taking the main stage.

During my recent trip to Mumbai I could sense that the taxi scene there has become a bit volatile. The most likely successor to the Padmini was the Santro as it outnumbered all the other taxis combined. The other taxis included mostly Wagon Rs, Eecos and Altos. The Padmini has become quite difficult to spot.

The Tata Indica/ Indigo in yellow and black are almost non-existent despite their tremendous presence elsewhere in the country as taxis.

The Santro's tall boy design is favoured by taxi drivers. But then the wagon R is no short boy or girl. Why it has not been preferred is not understood ? But now comes the catch. The Santro's production was stopped early in 2015 by HMIL. HMIL is now projecting its i 10's lowest variant for the taxi segment . But very few of these could be sighted.

The taxi scene in Chennai where I also went a few days back is similar to that of Kolkata. There are many, many black and yellow Ambassadors but these are being scrapped with the "15 year life" law in vogue. These are being replaced by the Maruti Swift Tour as is prevalent in Kolkata.

There were more than 60,000 Padminis operating on Mumbai's roads in the 1970s, but a recent government order banning vehicles more than 20 years old has reduced the number to just over 9,000.

Amazing pictures all, thanks for sharing.Did we all forget about Indica? I guess its the most popular call centre /IT /BPO taxi of india, and now Vista LS is taking over the reins.

I have seen indicas running over 3lakh kms and barely 1 year old Vistas doing above 50-60k!

Also I see a large number of Wagon R Lxi CNG being run in Mumbai( UBER maybe ), and Xcent taxi also is getting popular it seems.
