When the americans were busy trying to boot the taliban out of power the regional warlords all wanted Toyotas and the simple reason was that they knew they were reliable and durable.

usage of toyota by the american SFs also gave them the advantage of mixing with the situation because the taliban couldnt identify the approaching vehicles unless they were with in firing distance! otherwise the humvees could be seen from far off distance!

here are few more photos

But the question still remains are we going to see anything from Tata/AL/ or Mahindra which would really stir up the loins of a Jeeper ...

Any more specs / info on this TATA LSV ?

The Axe / Tantra and Tata look really like a they are poised for some hardcore challenges.

I hope they chose the Axe (Looks like a killer performer off road) or the Vectra (Lovely old school looks)..or may be they will chose both.

Our interest in Indian army disposal jeeps is going to increase drastically!

I can add two cents here. Tata LSV is powered by a 125 HP 3 liter engine mated to an allison 1000 series transmission (originally rated for much higher powered engines). An automatic transmission was the requirement specified by the armed forces for this HMV(high mobility vehicle). Mahindra fitted a 2.6 liter ssangyong engine (i wonder why not a tweaked 2.6 L scorpio engine) and a GM transmission which looked like a better engine - transmission fit. The Tata LSV has a top whack of 105 KMPH(limited due to the transmission) whereas the axe goes much faster. Also the FE depends on the engine - TC(Torque converter) matching which is better for the AXE compared to the Tata LSV.
As far as off- roadability is concerned, i think both fare equally well.
