Surprised to see the pictures. Do you think the AC is not functioning and BMTC is not repairing it ? Or BMTC itself has disabled the AC for more FE from the bus ?

The Tata Marcopolo rattletrap-smokestacks struggle to pick up speed, and they let out enough soot to turn a white shirt into pitch-black within seconds, if you are behind one. BMTC is probably trying to improve the situation by removing the AC and hence reducing the load on the engine. At the same time, as you said, it'll improve the FE too.

The way the workshop has cut the sealed side glasses and installed sliding windows is commendable.

Have seen these Marcopolos in the Suvarna guise, but the buses looked like they were brand new. Not sure if the older A/c ones have been converted. If so adding to your point, the refurbishing is also well done.

I'm sorry, but I don't think those are AC buses.

BMTC, if I'm not mistaken had launched Non AC Marcopolo's on certain routes sometime back

Even I did think the same as these buses seemed to be new and not those battered smoke belching A/c ones.

But one point made me think twice, if these were non A/c then why do they have those A/c humps on their roof? Kept me wondering!

Not everyone. Still there are many old a/c buses running on 342 & 362C routes. I guess they converted only one or two.

These are old BS III Marcopolo's only. BMTC have converted few to Non AC. Depending upon the performance, they will convert others over a period of time.

I seriously doubt BMTC would launch an AC bus with open-able windows

I could be wrong too.

As AshLey has already mentioned, these are the old Suvarna A/C buses which have been converted. Just yesterday I saw 2 Marco Polo buses with sequential reg numbers running together (45 series) in Hanumanthanagar. One of them was converted to the non ac with the grey and red livery (as in the pic posted by coolclouds) and the other was the Suvarna A/C in blue livery.

I remember seeing BMTC A/c Swaraj Mazdas a few years back which had openable windows. I don't think they are in operation now (or they might have been converted to Non A/C

The non A/c Marcopolos of the BMTC are front engined. The A/c Suvarna Marcopolos are rear engined. KSRTC did use the rear engined non A/c Marcopolos for Mysore City transport though. These buses looked exactly like the converted Suvarna A/C buses

The one in the pic was sure an ex ac bus. Looking at its window re configuration and also the stickering at the side and rear mentioning "A/c Air suspension vehicle."

Hats off to BMTC for this commendable conversion as the bus looks brand new.

They have converted a few of these. I must admit, the work is top class. BMTC's Central workshop has done a work that is too un-government'ish.

Here is a shot of one of them - caught this morning near Town Hall:

I find almost all BMTC buses(except volvos) idling at higher rpms: this when compared to TNSTC buses.

Today spotted an old Volvo bus converted to non a/c in Bangalore. It had a registration number KA 01 F 2202 and was on typical white & blue livery.

No idea how they manage fuel consumption.

Couldn't click a pic :(

Its not a Volvo. But its an old Ashok Leyland Panther (RE SLF) with a body that resembles Volvo. They used to run it as an AC bus earlier (they used to charge fares somewhat similar to Volvo).

An old picture of the bus (Photo taken in 2009)
