I was thinking exactly the same thing. The cockpit looks like a jugaad version and not something that is professionally done.

I sometimes wonder why the unions don't protest about unhealthy, unergonomic working conditions and only protest about comp and benefits.

Default Guwahati ASTC gets 61 City Buses under JNURM Scheme II

ASTC (Assam State Transport Corporation) Guwahati today got 61 city buses under JnNURM Scheme II

The 11 number of AC and 50 number of Non-AC buses under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission Phase-II are the special purpose vehicles and they would ply between Jalukbari-Noonmati, Jalukbari-Beltola via Paltanbazar, ISBT-Mirja and ISBT-Jagiroad routes.

Has anyone got more details on the buses? I see only AL JanBuses in the pic.

The buses in the pic look like AC JanBuses to me. So probably they bought both the AC & Non-AC variants of JanBus itself

TATA Marcopolo non AC low floor buses have made its debut in Kerala for the KURTC. Spotted this bus for the first time at the Seaport Airport road in Kochi, today. Was on a Limited Stop service to Angamaly. The TATA and Marcopolo monikers were seen near the front door also.

Vasai Virar municipal transport corporation (VVMT) has started getting delivery of new buses under JNNURM. I spotted an Ashok Leyland Janbus belonging to VVMT on Ghodbunder road today.

HRTC JNNURM buses.
1. Longer wheel base, low floor ones for plain areas and lower hills.
2. Short wheel base, low floor buses for high hills.

I had a short journey in VVMT's JanBus. Few observations:
  • Bus has 6 forwards gears, and Leyland's Leymatic AMT.
  • This was my first ride on any AMT vehicle. I found the gearshifts to be tad slow. The lag was specially noticeable while shifting from 1st to 2nd. After that, it became more seamless.
  • I was on the first seat, just besides the driver. The "phus phus" sounds of AMT module in work were clearly audible while shifting gears.
  • Engine note was slightly gruff. Not butter smooth like the BS-3 SLF buses of Ashok Leyland.
  • Bus seemed to have sufficient power. Being a new bus, the driver was slightly cautious, hence I cannot give a confident opinion on this. On empty stretches it reached 80 km/h without any fuss.
  • Speed was limited to 80 km/h.
  • The bus won't move unless all doors are closed. I am sure the operators will soon find some jugaad to bypass this.
  • Needles in the instrument console do a full sweep when ignition is turned on.
  • Driver was using manual mode for almost the entire journey. He was upshifting early.
  • Interior has LED lighting
  • Build quality was good enough. It is more of function over form.
  • Driver was in general more pleased with this bus than Low floor Marcopolos which operated on this route previously.
A few pics, clicked from my cell phone:

WABCO-Leymatic AMT does duty in the bus. Any idea what those buttons are for? M/A was for manual mode.

Front view. LED route indicator was not yet programmed. Note the sticker "NON AC". It seems passengers are mistaking this to be an AC bus due to its looks!

'C' could crawler or creeping gear

E/P could be electronic parking

One of the notorious 'red' CSTC buses (route 5 or 8B) - this would have been among the last few, already a rare species in 2006 when this grainy photo was taken from my first camera mobile. The low suspension with an empty load is surprising. Characterized by the mid-placement of the single, narrow door and usually always filled to bursting capacity (thanks no doubt to the lack of interest of the conductors to bother ticketing) these buses were the worst serial traffic-offenders.

And a photo of a standard non-AC KSRTC bus, taken at the Mysore Road Satellite Bus Terminal while waiting for a Mysore bus at 2130 on New Year's Eve 2012. I reached Mysore at the stroke of midnight.

M/A - Manual / Auto Mode
E/P - Economy / Power Mode (Used along with A Mode)
C- Crawler Mode

Wrt buses not moving while door is opened is more of requirements from UBS2.

Good Review Akshay. I was eagerly waiting for a Janbus real ride experience write up.
Some of my observations on your points. Not sure if am right though.
[*]This was my first ride on any AMT vehicle. I found the gearshifts to be tad slow. The lag was specially noticeable while shifting from 1st to 2nd. After that, it became more seamless.

The gear shifting will take tad more time than an automatic transmission as this is a automated manual transmission. But the precision will be more. I havn't gone in a Janbus yet but i have taken by ride in a Volvo B12B in dubai and i have felt the same experience too.

[*]I was on the first seat, just besides the driver. The "phus phus" sounds of AMT module in work were clearly audible while shifting gears.

The clutch are actually air actuated if am right. That makes the phus phus sound.

Could you elaborate a bit more here, please?

The brake pedal looks different, more like those found in TM buses

IMO, there has to be minimum dimensions specified for the Indicator and Reversing Lights - these look puny for a bus, though stylish and sleek.
