This is a device which works as an auxiliary brake. It helps in the braking.

I was told that it costs 1,50,000 and is available an an option while purchasing a Chassis.

Also read that it increases the life of the braking components.
The main question I have is - is this device necessary in a long-haul Bus? An Inter-city Coach does not brake frequently. VOVLO uses this device as a selling point saying that you can keep the vehicle in operation for 20 hours a day since the brakes will not get heated
The main purpose of giving retarder is to reduce the stopping distance of vehicle during braking(remember todays buses are capable of cruising upto 120kmph). This acts along side with service brakes and provide a better braking during high speeds. Apart from this, it improves the brake pads/shoe life.

As for as the question of necessity, todays drivers hesitate to take non retarder buses after experiencing the effectiveness of retarders

The cost you mentioned is right.

Apart from Exhaust brakes as mentioned by Backaseatdriver, there are EMR(Electro Magnetic Retarder) - std fitment in 12M and 12M RE - 225 HP(Brakes India and Telma make), and Hydraulic Retarder - std fitment in LPO 1618(VOith make).

VOlvo and MB have Hydraulic retarder(Voith Make).

There is no question regarding the effectiveness of retarders.

Hydraulic retarders have cooling circuits (not sure about electric retarders) and hence the retarder needs to be cooled by the engine cooling module. When older generation vehicles are upgraded with retarders this can sometime be a challenge.

I finally spotted the new Multi-Axle Mercedes Benz bus of Karnataka SRTC. They've named this one also as "Airavat Club Class".

Their two-axle Mercedes did not get any brand name, while their Multi-Axle Mercedes would share the flagship brand with its Volvo cousin.

Among the first routes to be launched was Bangalore-Ernakulam. Currently one pair of buses operate on this route (Dep from Bangalore at 19:44 and from Ernakulam at 18:28). Effective next week (10/10/11, ex-Bangalore), there would be two daily Multi-Axle Merc services on the Bangalore-Ernakulam route.

Also, the route would have ONLY multi-axle services! The position on this route would be 2x Merc Multi and 1x Volvo Multi.

First impression of the Merc Multi - the stickering is awful. The sticker quality looked very bad. The bus is very noisy on the outside - will check it from inside very soon. The crew were caring the baby well - they got the bus washed. After they got in, the conductor came with a cloth and cleaned the steps! Hope to try the service soon.

Here are my pics: (No interior shots)

Not very sure if any one still does, but Shama Sardar and Conti used to operate 2+1 Volvos. Conti had mixed accommodation - the front half having 2x1 seating, and the remaining having 2x2 seating.

Shama Sardar had a full bus with 2x1 seating running on the Chennai-Bangalore route.

To the best of my knowledge, the only existing 2x1 operator is "Olivea" (Super Luxury Coaches).

Yes, even I too remember with my vague memory seeing Shama Sardar in Madivala. But searched their website but could not find it!

But Conti's layout is something strange!

Shama Sardar recently introduced a Multi-Axle bus - so may be they culled the 2x1 bus.

Even Parveen used to have such buses - their Chennai-Kannur King Long used to have front half 2x1 seating and the rear half regular seating (This service is no-more). I guess even the King Long that came to Bangalore had such seating.

Now such seating is no-more. Every one is getting Multi-Axles with 2x2 seating.

Not sure about the Shama Sardar, but I remember travelling in a Sangita Travels Volvo with the first 4 rows in 2x1 and the remaining in 2x2 configuration. It was a first/second gen B7R with AP registration.

Sharma Transports has a Volvo Sleeper coach for a Chennai-Bangalore service. It is also an old, battered gen 3 Volvo 9400. The bus quality is rated low in redBus, and considering how it looked from the outside, it wasn't surprising.

KaSRTC is going mad with Multi-Axles! Now three of them call on at Kochi.

Here are the timings ex-Kochi: 1830, 2005 and 2030. ex-Bangalore: 19:45, 21:20 and 21:45. The fare is around Rs. 800.

Here are a few images...
