The new Tata 1512c BS3 comes with GB600, a 6 forward speed gearbox as standard OE. For buses like these there is no crawler gear. Wrong driving practice eventually called the first gear so.

Hi BSD, 1) I was not mentioning about bus body rattling, but about passing on of engine vibrations to chasis and the body. Even in neutral, vibrations was more on the upper side in this euro3 bus. 2) There was a drawing describing gear positions on top of the engine cover, near to the ' turbo charger' caution message which we normally see in KeSRTC buses. Also it was specifically mentioned that bus should be driven from 1st gear from stop. May be because drivers take of from 3rd?

That has a pretty obvious answer. It is close to 120hp, though if i remember correctly the exact figure is close to 117hp.

Has the HP figure gone up after switchover to BS3? The NA version of 5.9 used to offer 120 HP earlier. Interestingly, there's a wide range of power rating options from B 5.9, starting from 120 HP and going right upto 230 HP.

A rare newspaper add in one of the leading English daily published in 1998, the AL & Tata side by side! It was the time when Telco launched buses with Cummins engine. AL meanwhile enjoyed the majority with most leading STUs in the country.

There were some discussions early on R&D spent by ALL and TML.
AL- 2.9% of sales revenue
TML - 0.9% of sales revenue(Including passenger car segment)

Is the TML figure on an international scale or a national scale??

No matter what the questions answer may be though, TML is so much larger in terms of overall revenue, that the actual amount spent on R&D of TML will end up being about 3 to 4 times that of ALL.

Convert this to Rs amount and see the ratio between AL and TM. Also see the amount spend more per product, which company is spending more per product?

What ever calculation you do the % of R&D on total sales in the metric to guage.
And I wish to insist that the figures were given by me only as a info and not to tell the supremacy of AL over TML for spending in R&D.
A small correction in info - TMLs % on R&D is 1.2% and not 0.9%.

Also, dont you think a smaller company would actually have to spend a larger %tage on R&D than a much larger established player. The idea i want to put forward is that a direct comparision of the R&D expense ratio to sales would not be a very good way to compare.

For example let us say, i spend 1000rs to design a 100rupee product, sell a thousand of them. So the %age will be 1%. While another company spends 800rs to design a similar 100rupee product, but sell only 200 of them, the percentage would end up being 4%.

Whose R&D is better would you say??

Again, let me reiterate, this is not to say either TML or ALL is better at R&D, but to point out that just R&D expense as a percentage of sales cannot bring about any concrete conclusions.

Tata Motors delivers 1100 buses (LPO1618) to Hafil Transport, Saudi Arabia. The buses will be used for transporting school children in the city of Dammam, under the Saudi arabia's School transportation initiative. TML won this order inspite of stiff competition from Chinese makes! (Image Source: TML Strides)

This seems to be a new body design from ACGL, may be custom for this order. Also i think this has a slave engine for the air-conditioner.

Also notice the design for the windows, the lower portion is fixed, while the upper part has sliding glass panes.
