Perfect . They should do the job. But why are the armed forces moving away from the ever so reliable Ashok Leyland ? Their Tatra trucks are a delight to watch and they must be performing their job too. So you get good looks as well as get the job done.
Slightly OT Tatra is not from Ashok Leyland but manufactured by BEML in India under license.

Thanks for the correction but it is still high and mighty and quite a looker I should say.

Yeah but it is another class altogether for different application and payload ( Roket Launchers ,missials and NBV survival shelter)
I guess for LSV kind of application a high and mighty is not needed / suitable.

In minds of general public AXE with headlights with mean eye look may be important but for Army payload carrying capacity , GC, Top speed , gradeability , water fording capability and temperature range of operation ,Performance at high altitude and also in desert sector are more important then looks.

Not to say that any other competitor was any less on these counts but people here are just talking of looks.

I agree and I too am only talking about the looks only. Capacity, segment, top speed and other performance factors and spec should be left to the ministry and best not discussed here for the benefit of the nation. IMO.

About the looks what I am saying is, companies can give a better design, like a Tatra, and still deliver performance. Or rather, we have a good design in the Tatra also and manufacturers can make good designs if they want to. It is not important for the purpose they serve is a different issue. Plus looks are subjective and grow into you with time.

Here is what I feel is the crux of the matter:

1. Should defense vehicles follow function over form? Yes.

2. Is it possible to make better looking equally capable vehicles? Yes, and there are a lot of examples as others have stated(Hummer, Axe, Jonga, Tatra, Stallion)

3. Does this TATA contraption look acceptable? Absolutely not.

I dony if you guys feel the same . But the design of the Axe and the TATA thingy is sooo influenced by the hummer . Someone should try copying the Dartz COmbat too . When it comes to armoured vehicles I dont think anything would beat the Dartz . And they advertised their product wonderfully in the most recent fast and the furious : fast five .

Oh ! I correct myself its not the dartz comabt that was used it was Gurkha LAPV. awesome vehicle though . TATA take a cue from these !

Tata's are planning to leverage their JLR stable i suppose, i hope this vehicle succeeds in the trials, it will great news for Tatamotor shareholders who were skeptical after TATA s took over JLR.

Ooh ,was thinking which vehicle was used in FnF 5 and then brushed aside it as one of the film creation like the Mongo Heist truck.
Then saw this thread and kinda proud that the vehicle carries an Indian name-Gurkha and that it's available here too.
hmm.. What will Force motors say?

When I was in Pune a week back, I saw this vehicle with Tata logo in the front grille. Since it was traveling in the opposite direction, I could only manage to take this picture. It had 'Temp' registration plates and was apparently being tested.

As is clearly evident from the picture, the vehicle was huge and looked all set for some serious military action. Notice the height of the vehicle which is further accentuated by the ladder to climb inside. Also notice the big, rugged tires and peculiar-looking muffler. This vehicle looks rather different from the crude-looking Tata LSV that was scooped by Autocar India.

May someone here please throw light on what actually is this?

This the TATA MPV-1(MPV=Mine Protected Vehicles). These vehicles can be seen in action in various parts of J&K with Army RR escorting the convoys consisting of AL Stallions,M&M Bolero Rakshaks etc.The state owned Defense PSU the OFB(Ordinance Factory Board) produces much better MPV's[Aditya MPV].But unfortunately, they cannot produce them in numbers

This Shows the M&M Axe,Vectra(Tatra/Iveco),OFB LSV(I think so!) and finally the TATA LSV slugging it out at Leh.

Eoww, now that's a military vehicle to the hilt and very un-civilian at that.
Guess this need some major tweaking to be a civilian desi hummer, unlike the Axe which looked ready for a civilian version.

Rightly said. This looked purpose-built for the Army and not a tweaked and revised military vehicle made out of a civilian vehicle. And it did turn heads owing to its huge size.
