Great to see that bus once again. I was one among the passengers for the first trip at Ensign travels, Kochi. They arranged chairs outside their premises with a board "Today's Volvo passengers" and had a small meeting before boarding the bus. We noticed shades of "Sharma" in front glass behind "Puzhekadavil" stickers.

If I am right, this bus was slightly bigger than the 1st gen Volvo in India.

If I am not wrong the fare was Rs.450/- when they introduced the service. I guess this was in 1999, right?

I have heard someone saying that Volvo had given a bus to Puzhekadavil for "trials" before venturing in to the Indian market.

supply 500 units of 3123 multi-axle vehicle and 100 units of 12-metre bus, Ashok Leyland said in a statement.

"The order is cumulatively worth in excess of Rs 125 crore, deliveries against which are expected to commence in a month's time," it added.

The company said the 600 vehicles will be inducted into VRL's fleet, 80 per cent of which are Ashok Leyland products. Established in 1976, VRL has a fleet of 2,691 vehicles.
100 Volvos, 100 AL 12 M, where are they going to run these buses?

sgiitk, That was the early years of Volvo I guess. Was the Agra Bombay road called NH4 then? Always thought it's NH3

I guess they are heavily expanding operations. Perhaps entering more states. A good amount of the AL buses could be to replace their old buses as well.

The Volvo's - most likely all as replacements for existing buses / fleet augmentation/expansion. Have not seen any Volvo truck with VRL. For goods transportation, VRL prefers AL trucks.

The multi-axle trucks - most likely for replacement / ehancement of old vehicles. VRL uses a lot of multi-axle trucks, including trucks that have two axles at the front & two at the back. (Dont know which model is this). Note that these are not the tractor-trailer type trucks, and are not the 3-axle vehicles that are used typically in buses.

What you are talking about are the 31ton GVW models. I beleive they come with a 210hp engine from ALL. Tata's 3118TC and ALLs 3121 are making these models very popular nowadays.

Those two vehicles are also powered by the same engine - H series CRS engine with 230HP. Good move by VRL as they can maintain a less inventry of spare parts and rationalise them too..
230HP is the highest power engine offered in FE buses.
I feel soon or later AL should develop a FE multi axle bus and will have some good takers I guess.

VOlvo launched their trucks in India first and not the buses . The buses came after a few years . So Volvo was present in 98-99 but they had only trucks and no buses .

But they were more keen to enter the bus segment first. I remember them displaying their city bus (B7R LE?) during Chennai Auto show in 1995 (not sure). In fact, they even wanted to convince the erstwhile Pallavan Transport Corporation (PTC) to buy their bus by doing a trial on one route(21H) for one week. I am sure they did the same in other cities as well.

To confirm, Volvo started its operations in 1998, building its first FM 8*4 Tipper truck for the mines out of the Hosakote factory in Bangalore. This was followed by the FH 6*4 Tractor. The bus though initially started of as
chassi being built in the truck factory , then shipped to Azad coaches for the final body.due to quality issues with AZAD, Volvo decided to setup its own manuacturing facility and this was done at HOSAKOTE itself. It was only a matter of time before VOLVO took over the JV and not a big surprise because right fromt he begining VOLVO was the majority stakeholder (70%).

True. Below is from FT.com article dated 31 Aug 2009

"Volvo launched in India in 2001 anyway and within a few years created a new market. Today, “taking a Volvo” has become the generic term in India for riding an interstate luxury bus, no matter what make of vehicle it is."

Cheers!!

This bus had a Konvekta AC Unit. I am not sure about the Body Builder. This bus was imported from Europe. The bus had a Sticker VOLVO ON A TRIAL RUN.
