This is aimed at a segment that couldn't care less about the aesthetics of anything.
The important thing for this particular segment is to be able to carry passengers at the least cost per passenger, so all that is required for a vehicle to be successful is to have high mileage and low maintenance.

But there seem to be better looking, safer and a fuel efficient options in the market at a similar price point from their primary competitor. Looks do matter in which case.

This market does have a lot of potential once one get the vehicle approved as a mode of public transport in each state.

Approval is a tricky issue. Only Bajaj will be able to do that with the RE 60. Maybe Tatas and Mahindras have better R&D capabilities but to get a vehicle qualified as a quadricycle, a different set of skills are required which only Bajaj seems to have. You may check out the details here.
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/indian...icycles-6.html (Rajiv Bajaj lashes out at Tata and Maruti for opposing quadricycles)

GIO/ IRIS will survive only if the state govts appreciate the fact that they are safer than the 3 wheeled contraptions or even better than the faster plastic bodied RE 60.

Also any idea how it manages the inclines in Kerala?

The entry for the front passenger is not restricted. If you closely look at the images, you will find a door hinge. The latch is from inside.
