i am juts doing the same now since my old pc is fetching me peanuts in exchange so decided to conver t to full car entertaintment system. motherboard is a mATX with amd athlon 3000+ , 40gb HD,4 sata ports, 2gb ddr1 ram. for the enclosure decided to use that aluminium school box ( easy to make holes and slots). logitek trackball mouse. a rubberized keypad stored out of view.
power supply from a ups with battery removed and seeing if i put in a 300w smps. when i get time for next lamington road visit wii look out for dc -dc kits and startup and shutdown controllers.
no headace option is to buy power supply forn "iride" for 4.5k.
planning a normal screen lcd of 6" with vga connection, since touch screen is not in budget presently. saw a 7" for 4.2k but it is not very easy to mount it in a baleno console without being seen all the time. a sony 4 channel will power the speakers. a tv tuner card with fm will be integrated with windows media center.
hard disk will be in a foam support for absorbing shocks.
do let me know about the working voltage of mercury ups circuitry( have a dead battery unit at friends place) does the control card require anyother voltage other than 12vdc?. i am planning to open up a powersafe.
project is on hold since my next pc laptop or desktop next???
i think AMD will have heating problem so might wanna take care of that,i am using wood for the box as it is flexible to work with,,and with the ups and smps components,,grounding does not become an issue. If u can try to go in for the board i mentioned on top,,Its Intel with Celeron 1.3 proc bundled wiht onboard vga, sound, lan and costs only 3k,
It has a mini atx form factor, which brings the overall size and heat problems to a minimum.
For my screen i am trying to get vga to rca convertor,(if any body knows where i can source it from kindly let me know.)
Lastly mini keyboards with track ball are available in the market, try to get that,it will suit a car better.

i could not find momonitor of 6 or 7'' with vga input in all the places i know in mumbai, so decided to use headrest monitor of 7'' with av input. got vga to av converter from lamington for 1650. not yet tested. also bought a itx zebronics board with celeron 1.7 for 3600 from a second hand dealer. later i found celeron 3.0 with mb cost only 4k. kind of got cheated but my mistake didnt check earlier.

saw a 150w inverter for 1800 but didnt look reliable, so will open up friends microtec ups & power it with 12v battery & see how it wil work out. any updates on your project? loading media center now on a 40gb to go along with this. hope it will run ok. then a tv tuner card with fm will finish cpu. finding thatold aluminium school box is the problem now.

The 12 volts ups transformer are not made of solid built. They are made for 20-30 minutes duty as there battery can supply that much duration of backup. I would suggest to try 800 va inverter it will be a much stable option.

gigy try Wholesale computer hardware supplier & store - computer networking hardware. The site is of a computer vendor in Delhi who imports stuff from China and then rebrands and sells them. They have a few car inverter models which might be of interest to you.
