you can have a look at this site, am sure this would help you to zero down on what you need.
There are also tons of information, just type "Carputer" in search column and you will get all of them.

Hope this helps!

I am planning to use 8" widescreen Lilliput screen.
Can any one confirm if it will fit in the double din Civic dash panel?

The display portion of the LCD is 7" x 4"...

Unless you modify and fiberglass the dash kit anything is possible.

7 inch wide screen displays are already 100+ mm wide and barely fit in double dash opening. 8 inch will not fit without modifications.

I am confused! Where am I going wrong?
As per Pythagorus theorem a^2 + b^2 = c^2, where a, b are sides and c is hypotenuse of the right angle triangle.

So for a 7" screen, 16:9 aspect ratio width= 6.1" and Height = 3.43"
and for a 8" screen, 16:9 aspect ratio width= 7" and Height = 3.93"

I guess lilliput screens are 15:9 aspect ratio so in this case
for a 8" screen, 15:9 aspect ratio width= 6.875" and Height = 4.125"

I guess width would fit however height might be slight problem. Note I am here talking only about the visible screen and not the outer case fitment.

BTW what is the exact size of a Double din opening? Google suggests it as 180mm x 100mm (W x H), approx 7” x 4”, can any one please confirm.

Also can anyone recommend me where can I buy hard disk from in Bangalore, I am looking for Seagate® Momentus® 7200.3 - ST9320421AS (320GB). Phone numbers will help. Also let me know if any one has any price idea about the components I am looking for.

As per my understanding it is 178x100 mm.

Regarding LCD's, some lilliput displays are 15:9 as well.

For hard disk, try Computer Warehouse Online - Buy Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Accessories, Laptops and Electronics they are at barton centre, mg road. Prices are slightly higher than SP road, but prices are fixed, so you dont get a feeling of getting cheated.

Also one point on your display size calculation-Usually displays have extra glass on all sides and this is not symmetric. Left and bottom size has little more glass outside the viewing area compared to top and right side. Have a look at some LCD data sheet for better understanding of this.

My ballpark estimates show $600-$700 for a 10.2" custom solution comprising the following

10.2" Open Frame Transreflective LCD panel
SAW Touchscreen
LED Backlight controller (Demo Board)
LCD Controller Board (I dont need this since my motherboard supports LVDS panels directly)

one size never fits all, it's so much fun making one on your own focused on what you need.

I referred to the Art of Building Computer Transport article and it looks appealing to me. I would try and build a computer transport based on that.

I am not sure if all the recommendations given in it will really add tangible value.
I will need help from all the audio gurus here to help me guide through this. I request mods to move this thread under Ask the Gurus section...

While primary purpose of this CarPC will be Audio player (and processor hopefully), it will also be used for common carputer activities like GPS, video playback, internet browsing etc. So I guess I would leave the BIOS settings untouched and start by creating a seperate boot partition for Audio only settings and general settings.

Also the article suggests that powersupply available in computer is too noisy, so a parallel PSU should be setup for the Soundcard. Is this really required?

My sound card Asus Xonar does not take power through PCIx, it has an independent power supply, so I was planning to tap a 5V (?) output of the main Opus 360W PSU (before it goes into the PC) for this. Would this be sufficient or do I need to look at two parallel PSUs?
I have not ordered any PSU yet, but was planning to order OPUS 360W DC-DC.
