Monsoons are there to go out and enjoy the rain. Thankfully, Bangalore is blessed. We can reach the hills within five hours and experience it.

Last time when we were in Kadamane estate in Sakleshpur, Cariappa, the young manager was mentioning about Mango Range Estate belonging to the same group near Gudalur on the way to Ooty. The estate is in a place called Pandalur on Gudalur - Wayanad highway. We had travelled on this road earlier when we went to Wayand last year. Instead of taking the regular route via Sultan Bathery, we took a detour and had come via Gudalur. And what a drive it was! This is one of the most picturesque roads in South India. So, when Carry told us about Mango Range, we were excited to do this trip next time.

On a lazy Friday morning we decided to try out this place. Got the telephone number from Carry and called up to check availability. "Yes, it is available" said Ms Meenu Mandanna Nair who manages it. "But be prepared for rains" she warned. We were well prepared as we knew it will be pouring in that area. The weather forecast was also suggesting the same.

Leaving Bangalore at 7 in the morning, we took our usual route via Kanakapura to reach Gundlupet. The sky was overcast. Rains in the past few days had turned the parched lands green. The farmers were busy in the fields. There was slight chill in the air.

The road through out is in excellent condition. Driving through the forests of Bandipur and Mudhumalai was a pleasant experience. The rains has converted the whole place green and lovely. Few weeks back the same forest was brown and dry.Turning right at Gudalur, we were now in tea country. It is green everywhere. The last few KMs from the Highway to the bungalow was just lovely. Winding roads inside the estate through expanse of green was eye candy. Give it to British to choose the best spot to have their residences. The Sinnadorai Bungalow in Mango range is on top of small hillock with lovely views. (We could not see them due to mist :Frustrati).

This is a cute little British bungalow under the canopy of a huge pine tree. It is unlike Kadamane estate which is bigger. This makes the place charming and exclusive. It has only three rooms. Each room is large with its own sit out/veranda. There is a fireplace in each room as well. The anteroom is large and elegant. Lot of antique furniture spread out in all the rooms. The dining hall with antique furniture is apt. It did not take too much of time for us to fall in love with this place.

We had plans to drive around after lunch. That was not to be as it started raining and whole place was enveloped with mist. It was lovely to sit in the veranda and hear the sound of the rain drops. The mist ensured that there was no point to driving and better spend time with a book in hand.

The rains stopped for a while and we took a walk in the estate. The whole estate was drowned in clouds. We could see the layers of clouds passing by us as we walked around the estate inhaling the cleanest air!

It started raining and we rushed back to spend the evening with bubbly in hand listening to the sounds of cicada, frogs et al.....

We woke up to the calls of Malabar whistling trush. The rains continued, mist was everywhere. It was a lovely, lazy morning. Rain and mist meant no walking around. Sipping excellent tea sitting in the veranda listening to "whistling schoolboy" made our day.

A nice video on "Whistling schoolboy's bird song"

We bid good bye after a good breakfast. This time we drove via Sultan Bathery. The return drive was delightful. A lovely road. Excellent weather.......chilll, intermittent drizzle, misty. We switched off the AC, opened the windows and let the "atmosphere come in"!!

We will leave you with few pictures we had taken when we drove on this road. Look, how lovely the vistas are.
Travel Tips

Distance from

Bangalore - 285 KMs
Mysore - 134 KMs
Recommended Route from Bangalore (click on the links below)

Bangalore - Pandalur via Chamarajanagar/Sultan Bathery - https://maps.google.co.in/maps?saddr...mra=ls&t=m&z=9

Bangalore - Pandalur via Chamarajanagar/Gudalur - https://maps.google.co.in/maps?saddr...mra=ls&t=m&z=9

We would recommend you to go by one and return by other to get the best of both!

Getting there

By Road - The best option. Either to drive oneself of take a bus to Gudalur from where one can rent a jeep to go to Pandalur.

By Air - Nearest airport is Mysore.

By Train - Not a good option as the nearest station is Nanjangud which is 112 KMs away.

Best time to go - Any time of the year.

Other Information

a) A great place chill out and relax. Also to explore Nilgiris, Mudhumalai, Bandipur and Wayanad. Ooty is 70 KMs and Kalpetta (Wayanad) is 45 KM.

b) Ooty and Wayanad can be comfortably done as day trips. So is Bandipur/Mudhumalai.

d) A drive to needle peak is a fascinating experience where you get 360 degree view of Nilgiris.

e) You can also visit the tea factory to watch how tea is processed.

f) The staff can also arrange for a visit to "Gold Mines" - yes, gold mines - in the area. These are not regular mines but mined locally by tribals.

I have a skoda rapid, I up'ed the tires from 175/70/r14 to 205/55/r15. Replaced the steel rims with alloys. A couple of days after the tires I got the alignment done and also made sure the pressure was correctly set to 32 all around.

Three days after that the car started banking left, went in and saw both the left tires were at 18/19 psi. Got a topup done to check if the same thing happens. And after 2 days the same thing has happened, car is banking left again.

These are new Yoko s drives, could both the front and the rear have a puncture. That sounds unrealistic.
Could the alloys be causing the car to put more weight on the left ?
Could something be wrong with the tires ?
Or against all odds I really do have a puncture on both the tires

I am going to go and get is looked at tommorow, and so wanted insight on what possible issues can cause both the tires to loose pressure.

And yes I already am running on nitrogen.

Dear Members,

Background - I have been reading Team-Bhp for quite sometime and coupled with a Mech Degree (which by the way helps throw out some jargon's), I consider myself a genuine automobile aficionado. I like discussing cars, their workings, new releases, market share, potential etc. While these traits are genuinely admired in the workplace (imagine office full of IT geeks, talking about API's and JSP's), I somehow have a tough time replicating the grandeur at home.

Problem - My mum owns a Santro, it's almost 9 years old. has served well but of late has started feeling pretty old, this coupled with the fact that Hyundai service is no Maruti plus we had a bad exp when Hyundai dealer changed the spare wheel and put a cracked rim during servicing. My mum had been resisting the change for 2 reasons - 1) She is comfortable in her old work horse and 2) She says whatever money we plan to put in the new car, we should give it to her for her personal expenses :). With my father now putting a foot down regarding the new car, it is a matter of time before we see a new car in the parking lot.

Requirements -

Daily drive - around 20-30 Kms city d

No highway drive

Petrol preferred

Low cost of ownership

Fuel Efficient

Options - Couple of conflicts

Swift - Firm favorite (my mum favors a car which can be serviced by a local mechanic), but with a house with a Swift(D), Dezire, Sx4, I think another Swift would be an overkill, plus the low seating of Swift would be an unwelcome change considering that she has been conditioned with tall boy driving style.

Punto - with the recent price plunge, it looks tempting(I have had admired this Italian beauty for long), but after a harrowing experience with Palio, I will have to move heaven and earth to get this one in our family.

Micra - This checks lots of boxes (Jap/Reliable/Fuel efficient plus automatic), but I am still not convinced. I have read a long term ownership review and looks like people are happy with overall experience. Would require team members suggestions

Polo - Lot of bad press even in T-Bhp, not sure if I should even test drive this one.

i20 - Not sure at all. Please suggest.

Quanto - Tall boy, SUV feeling, but Mahindra(ermmm) and hence question marks.

Budget - 6-7 L

Time Frame - 2 Months at the most

Please suggest and let me know if I have missed out on real gem (something with a good road view akin tall boy design).

The 4th edition of the Mughal Rally in Kashmir is the first motorsport event in the country to be a hill climb battle. The two-day race begins on June 28 with over 150 competitors.

The hill climb race begins on the Indian motorsport circuit on two of the highest peaks in the country – Pir Ki Gali and Sinthan Pass. ‘Gali’, which commonly implies ‘street’ in Hindi, is used in the Gujjar dialect of Kashmir for ‘mountain pass’.

The event is slated on June 28 and 29, 2013. On June 27, the pre-event scrutiny will be held in Srinagar to ensure that all vehicles comply with stringent rallying and safety regulations.

On June 28, drivers will test their skills in the hill climb to Pir Ki Gali, the highest point on the Mughal Road, at an elevation of 11,500 feet (4,100 meters) approximately. The Mughal Road is the historic track used by Emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan to traverse Kashmir to go to Lahore.

On June 29, the second hill climb battle will come into play when competitors race to Sinthan Pass, at an altitude of 12,450 feet (3748 meters). The Sinthan Pass is on National Highway 1B, connecting Kishtwar and Anantnag. Even during the height of summer, the hill climb up to Sinthan Pass is lined with walls of snow. It is open from April to September.

The architect of the hill climb race is Himalayan Motorsport, the Shimla-based motorsport club which has created the Raid De Himalaya.

The Mughal Rally started in 2010, when the Mughal Road was a quagmire of deep mud and rocks. It is now a smooth, double laned highway which will be formally opened by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on June 25.

“The format of the event has changed from a rally to a hill climb because of the way the track has changed,” said Vijay Parmar, President of Himalayan Motorsport. “Rallying is on dirt track, which we see in the Raid. With the road almost fully tarmac here, we now have a fantastic hill climb challenge”.

Himalayan Motorsport has seen average top speeds on this stretch go up from a mere 55 kmph in 2010 to almost 170 kmph in 2012. “We see this rally becoming one of the fastest hill climbs in the world. At around 30 kilometers each, the four hill climb stages on Peer Ki Gali and Sinthan Pass will require great skill" Parmar stated.

The Mughal Rally will race the 67 kilometer stretch of the Mughal Road in about 45 minutes.

The rally will be flagged off from the Royal Springs Golf Course by the J&K Tourism Minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir on June 28. It will proceed to Jammu over the Mughal Road for the night halt.

June 29 will see the rally return via the lesser known areas of Reasi, Salal, Gool to Ramban, and finally taken on the hill climb to Sinthan Pass, to end in Srinagar.

The Mughal Rally 2013 has 26 teams in the Xtreme (4X4) category, which is all about speed. The Enduro category, which runs on the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) format, has 35 teams in the fray. Each team comprises a driver and navigator. In the Xtreme (Moto) category, there are 10 bikers competing this year.

Hi,

I need help as i broke my car key yesterday. Please dont ask how :)

Good thing is that i didn't break it inside the keyhole and had the duplicate key at my home. Its just the metal part of the key which is in 2 parts now. At the moment, i am using the duplicate key.

i have requested to arrange one more duplicate key from Techno Automobiles and they told that the key will cost around 900 and it will cost you another 1600 for cutting & Training the key.

I told them to just provide the key at the cost of 900 and was thinking to get it cut in outside market which will cost about 50 Rs and thinking to install just the key part in my old remote which i think would not require to train / Pair the key with the car.

Just now i got a call from adviser that if you try doing so, it might destroy your ignition. Now i am scared as in that case they won't entertain the case in warranty.

Can you please suggest what can be done. I am enclosing the pictures of the broken key for your reference. (Quality is not good as these were taken by phone camera. )

Also, i tried changing the metal part of the broken to my other key's metal part & key worked perfectly fine...

Awaiting quick help

Hi guys,

My ford figo diesel is 2 years old and has done 40,000kms on OEM GoodYear. There is a little tread on these tyres but my ride quality has been on the decline for about 3-5 months now. Normal driving on city streets is rather bumpy - I can tell this because my Figo felt so awesome (like a sedan) to drive when I go it. It just feels drastically different now. Also, I am not a great driver - I rash drive (on vacant roads ofcourse) and I do fast corners for the heck of it. My avg speed to work is 80-90kmph and I hit 120-130 (for stretches of 3-4kms) very often on my drive to work.

So, should I get a full new set (just based on 40k, the ride being not comfortable and my driving style)? If yes, what goes will with Ford Figo?

If I shouldn't get a new set just yet for my Figo, should I get the suspension checked for bumpy ride?

Would appreciate any suggestions/recommendations - TIA, guys.

Suzuki Unveiled the third generation of swift in 2010. Last week we reported about Suzuki working on the facelift version of Swift. Now Suzuki German website has revealed the Swift facelift. Suzuki hasn’t made any changes for the swift design. Swift is always famous for the sharp looks. So engineers doesn’t have to do anything on looks. To go with the current trend of LEDs. Suzuki has given L-shaped LED Lights in the fog lamps. This is a copy cat from the Hyundai i20. Hyundai added LED lights to i20 last year.

Apart from the LEDs the Indicators are now placed in OVRMs from the front wheel arches. Side and rear of swift remains to be same. Globally Swift Facelift comes with a new golden shade. We hope that it will come to India also. Details about the Interior are not available now. But we can expect the interior to be remain the same. Mechanically swift is unchanged. Engines remains to be the same. 1.3 L Multijet Diesel engine and the 1.2 L K-Series engine. In India we can expect Maruti to introduce Automatic gearbox in the petrol version. Swift facelift will make its global debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor show.

This is SRinivas K from HYDerabad (SRKHYD) !!

Excited to be part of the best automotive forum in India.

Thanks to fellow BHPians, for keeping faith in me that I can still make it to forum stupid: (made it on 3rd attempt)

I started off my journey with very good BSA SLR bicycle then got promoted to Kinetic Honda and to Hero Honda Passion and then the present commute - the RED HOT Ford Figo.

I believe all these vehicles have one or two aspects in common. They don't overwhelm you with their size - hence feel more in control and there is always a element of 'fun to ride / drive'.

Apart from knowing / tweaking the 'automobiles', my hobbies include traveling, playing carroms and listening to music.

A big thank you for moderators and members for providing so much quality stuff on the forum and I will try my best to maintain the standards you people have set :thumbs up

Regards,
Srinivas

I’ve been a member here since June 2005, when I bought my Baleno Lxi. This was my very first post here (Stock tyres on the Baleno) I might say my driving profile has changed since then. I no longer consider 100 as high speed, for example! Bring on the corners, I say! The Baleno completely changed my outlook towards driving. Not posted much since then, but I have been following every significant event here. People like GTO, Samurai, v1p3r, Rudra Sen, et al are like friends, never mind the fact that I have never met them and probably never will. Thanks to everyone here that makes Team BHP what it is today. That comes from the heart. Now onto the main story.

The desire
Ever since Mahindra launched the XUV back in 2011, I have always wanted one. "Me wanty" was the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the launch video. The hype was so much back then, all over the web and print media, that this was the only launch I ever saw, then or since. I drive (or used to drive, gotta get used to that!) a 2005 Pearl Silver Baleno Lxi which served me amazingly well for that past eight years.

At Gyanabharathi Campus (Bengaluru University) sometime in 2006 I think.

On the way to Yercaud, during May 2011. Note the monkey watching me!
Attachment 1098473

I drove all of 48500 kms in that car over the period, so you get a good idea of my usage. Of course, the first three or four years I was using it only on the weekends or on the occasional highway trip so they don't count for much. It is only in the last three years that I actually started using it for my daily commute to office and wherever else I wanted to go, so about 80% of the usage has come in about 40% of the time. Sorry for rambling, let me get back to the main topic.

Why move from a sedan?
Last month, we went on a three day holiday to The Tamara, Coorg, near Madikeri. I'd recommend this place to anyone bored of the regular resorts in Coorg. We drove over there in my car as there were only three of us, me, wife and darling daughter. The roads are pretty good all the way to Madikeri after which the roads are so-so. While the Baleno never let us down at any stage in any way, I still felt it would have been nice to have a bigger car with a better GC and higher driving position, the better to see the innumerable potholes and the ability to get onto the shoulder with a lot more confidence. Earlier to that, we went to The Windflower in Pondicherry and took the Vellore-Arani route based on advice here. Then too I felt that same. A sedan is built for good roads, highways and pure bred city driving. It will take some punishment and not complain much, but too much is never good for them. In May, we went to Red Hills Resort in Ooty and I was thanking my stars that we decided not to take our car, as there was no road to speak of during the last few kms. My friend’s Scorpio in which we were travelling came up there without any drama, though.

My family consists of me (duh!), wife, 11 year old daughter and my 72 year old mom. My extended family also includes my sister-in-law, her husband and their two sons (aged 13 and 6) and we almost invariably travel together for most holidays. They own a 2006 Tata Indica, so we regularly take both cars since all of us will fit in neither my car nor theirs. We felt it would have been good to have one car where we could enjoy the good times together, while we can. This is not the only reason to go for bigger car, of course, but one of the factors I considered for deciding. Now they are buying a bigger one too, but that is another story... We also have a great circle of friends (some of whom are lurkers here as well) who also get together fairly regularly for weekend holiday drives to several places in KA/TN/AP/KL. The frequency of these holidays are increasing over the last year or so, due to various factors, be it one day trips or weekend jaunts. Have car, will drive. Scorpio, Quanto, Xylo, XUV, Palio, Baleno, Linea, Innova are mostly the vehicles we drive in. Nothing very fancy, no Beemers or Mercs.

The decision
The biggest factor was the fact that I just wanted the XUV! Reasons come later, this time the heart ruled and I just let it take over. I had decided to wait for the second generation or iteration just to let Mahindra iron out most of the niggles and problems that would undoubtedly accompany a launch of this magnitude. This, as we all know, happened in March this year with the much touted fix for the brake problems and the various fixes for the Infotainment system and electronics in the car. I had no more reason to delay the decision so after some discussions with my wife, we decided to go ahead with the plan.

I never really considered buying any other vehicle since my wife was very sure she didn’t want another sedan (strictly four seaters, even the best of them) and I was already sold on the XUV anyway. My daughter just wanted as many of us as possible to travel together, since they get to have much more fun that way. My mom didn’t have too much input on this, as long as she didn’t have to bend or climb much to get into the vehicle. My dad would have had some strong views, but he passed away early last year, may his soul rest in peace. But I am sure he would have loved the XUV for the ease with which he could have got in and out.

I did for a couple of hours consider the Duster, but wife said no because it was essentially a four seater masquerading as a five seater. I dropped it because did I mention it? I was sold already on the XUV. Oh and I also happen to think that the Duster from the front looks like a surprised face (a la ) with those head lamps, no offence meant to any Duster owner here.

Another major factor is that in that budget range (around 16L give or take) there is absolutely no other vehicle that is a 7 seater SUV with the features we were looking for. Safety, performance, gizmos, looks, presence, etc all point to the XUV and only the XUV. When I first visited the showroom, I saw the Rexton and while it looked really good, it was way out of my budget range with the starting point as around 23L on road. But it really looks fantastic and it has everything one would want from a car in the price range.

Which variant?
So the XUV it was. The W6 was a little too basic, no side air bags, no alloy wheels (although the upgrade option is present), not too many gizmos, BW infotainment system and hey I did have a slightly bigger budget anyway. The AWD was considered overkill for my driving profile and style, since I never plan to take it seriously off road. Maybe like the Baleno changed my driving style completely, the XUV will change it too, but at the moment it is how it is. Moreover, Debuda’s blog has changed the way I think about AWD and if he can do so much with an FWD, I can comfortably do much lesser with the same. So the W8 FWD variant was what we decided on. Fits bang on my budget and has everything I want. Or maybe I subconsciously tailored the budget to fit this one!

Which dealer?
The dealer experience goes such a long way in deciding on the vehicle, if you are dithering a bit about which one to buy. The final decision will probably depend on who treats you better! But in my case, it was more a decision of whom to buy the XUV from, rather than which car to buy. As such, I had only three choices. India Cars, Anant Cars, Sireesh Auto. So which dealer to buy it from? This one was a no brainer for me. Three of my circle have bought Mahindras from Anant Cars on Bannerghatta Road and had nothing but good things to say about the people there, so that was that. One of my friends also knows the MD/CEO of Anant Cars pretty well and as such, I was assured of a good deal in any case, not that his intervention was ever required.

The dealer experience
As I mentioned, the dealer experience is sometimes a clincher in many a decision. In this case, even though the decision was already made, I must mention that the guys over in Anant Cars are a great bunch of people. The Team Leader for XUV, Mr. Arun, who handled my case personally, is a very helpful and pleasant person to interact with. A couple of other people also were very good and all in all, it was a very good experience with them. I’d recommend this dealer any time in case any of you is wanting to buy any Mahindra vehicle. They have also recently opened a branch on Mysore Road, next to the BHEL factory, if that is closer.

The test drive
I requested them for a test drive on the following Sunday, since that would mean my family would be able to accompany me for it. My wife works too, even on Saturdays, so the only option was a Sunday. The dealer graciously accepted without any murmurs and duly, a white W8 FWD arrived at our doorstep albeit two hours late. We took it out for a long spin in city traffic conditions, some narrow lanes, some broad roads, some reasonably heavy traffic (being a Sunday, it wasn’t bumper to bumper but it wasn’t light either) and of course a longish run on the NICE toll road.

I was very satisfied with the performance and I questioned the representative at length about the brakes issue and all the other niggles that have been reported here and elsewhere. He answered all my questions to my satisfaction and was quite knowledgeable about the various problems that were originally reported and have since been claimed as resolved with the March 2013 update.

My wife liked that sheer amount of space available inside and the huge glass areas that gave wonderful outside visibility at all seats. My daughter never wanted to come out of the third row and said she was quite comfortable there. She was already planning long trips with her cousins and how much they would enjoy the undisturbed ride. When I took the vehicle over some bad parts of the road at around 40 kmph, she said she felt some jolts but nothing unduly uncomfortable. When I went over some major potholes at a slower speed, the bounce and sway were actually much more obvious.

The only drawback we felt was the absolute lack of luggage space when all three rows are up, but there seems to be sufficient space under the middle row of seats as well as in front of the legs (if you “adjust” a little bit), so that wasn’t a major factor. However, if we are to carry any decent amount of luggage especially when six or seven people are travelling, the roof rails seem to be the only option.

The vehicle seems to be built for the highways and the long, long straights. It was a pleasure flooring the pedal and feeling the surge. 100 comes and goes without you noticing it and only when the chime starts you notice that you have hit 150. No drama, no shivers, nothing. “Slow down now, this is more than enough. Who do you think you are? Schumacher?”, my wife says and I did, although there was absolutely no traffic on the NICE road at around 1:30 PM. So the vehicle passed the test drive passed with flying colours.

Deciding the colour
I initially wanted to go with Volcano Black or Dolphin Grey. In fact, my order booking form at Anant Cars also mentions the same colours. However, I took my wife and daughter over to the showroom for a visit before finalizing on the colour and both of them nixed the Black. This was because the Black exterior features a beige/brown interior combination and neither of them liked it on the grounds that it would be difficult to maintain and it would get dirty very quickly. The Grey comes with a black and beige combination, so it was deemed much better. However, the showroom had a vehicle in Opulent Purple parked outside in bright sunlight and my wife found the colour very striking. She was of the opinion that it would also be dark enough to be considered Black at night and with the added advantage that the interiors would be of the required black/brown combination. Now, dare we go against our better halves when it comes to decisions like this? Well, let me be honest, I liked it too. So Opulent Purple it was.

Attachment 1098474

The deal
After some initial discussions and the mandatory “haggling” over what accessories will be ordered for the vehicle and out of that what will be thrown in free by the dealer as a sweetener, the following were ordered:

Night Vision Colour Rear Camera (free)
DZiner Rubber mats (free)
Side footsteps (yet to be fitted)
Body side moulding – the chrome strip along the sides
Illuminated scuff plates – the ones that show XUV500 in blue when the door is opened
Under chassis coating

I managed to get a decent discount on the paid items too, due to some name dropping and creative haggling, so I think I managed to get a good deal out of the whole thing.

ICEing the XUV
The only option is to replace the speakers, of course, since the head unit is built into the Infotainment system and as such, cannot be separated out without some major circus. That would void the warranty anyway, I think.

After one listen to the audio at mid to high volume, I decided that the speakers must be replaced with something better. I wanted to go with the Infinity range from Harman, since that is what I had in my Baleno and they sounded simply awesome. The dealer mentioned that he could replace the stock speakers (they seem to be Nippon, decent at low volume but not too good at mid or high, unless you don’t care much for audio) with a set of Infinity PR6500CS component speakers along with the JBL GT-X626 4 Channel amplifier for a reasonable sum. I checked up the prices at various online retailers, as well as the neighbourhood car audio guys, and found that the price was a little on the higher side for the speakers. But I decided to go with the dealer fitment since that would mean I would have the audio from day one and I need not spend any more time searching out for a good audio outfitter. So that was ordered and included in the accessories list too.

The PDI
Once the financials were agreed upon and before I made the final payment (the amount I held back was nearly six lakhs, the down payment part of the whole deal), the dealer organized a PDI at their premises. Armed with the exhaustive 11 page printed T-BHP PDI document, me and a good friend of mine started the PDI and took two hours to go through every one of the points thoroughly. We were not allowed to take the vehicle out of the compound and onto the main road itself, so a small “local” drive had to suffice. The compound is quite big, so that was OK.

Attachment 1098475

All the points checked out and no discrepancies were found. None. I was one happy camper at the end of that particular PDI. Once the PDI was done and dusted, I made arrangements for the final payment and the deal was closed in full. Of course, the NCB was transferred over from my Baleno to the XUV, which resulted in an outright saving of approximately Rs. 20,000/- on the insurance value.

The delivery
Finally, the day that I had dreamed of for three long years arrived and we presented ourselves at the showroom bright eyed and bushy tailed. The obligatory coffee and bottled water rounds with the attendant small talk were dispensed with and the rep started the long process of going through the delivery documents in detail. “The keys, man, where are the keys?” were all that I was asking. “Patience Sir, all in due time” was his answer. Once the documentation and sign offs were over, we went outside and saw the vehicle decorated with the garland, ready for pooja and hand over.

The dealer appointed Shastriji performed quite a detailed pooja and even made a “J” out of flowers on the bonnet for my benefit.

Attachment 1098476

That took about 10 minutes and then came the moment!

Attachment 1098477

I drove out carefully and took about 45 minutes for the 20 km drive home, mostly in second and third gears since I was a little apprehensive of shifting to fourth. A smooth and easy experience. Helps when you have been driving since age 15, for more than 25 years, though! The family Premier Padmini, then a Maruti 800, then a Maruti Zen (the first car I bought) and a Maruti Baleno. Being a Maruti driver for nearly 15 of those 25 years, it is quite a different experience driving a non Maruti car.

The pooja at the temple
A more thorough pooja was organized in the evening at the Ganesha Temple near my home, where most of our family functions are organized and dates for important events are fixed. A hilarious incident occurred there. The Temple is on two levels, with each level accessible by a different road. Car poojas are held in level two, right in front of the main entrance, but the approach road is a little tight and narrow. I requested the pooja on level one, since I found a parking space just next to the entrance and managed to cajol them into agreeing. The Shastriji came down, saw my car and immediately exclaimed, “Bigger cars come up to level two! Why we just performed a pooja for a Tata Indica! Your car will definitely come there!” I was like “Man, this is nearly twice the size of an Indica”. But he was adamant and I had to move it to Level Two for the pooja. Maybe he meant Tata Aria, I have no idea!

First Impressions
I like the smooth way the car moves without any jerk while changing gears. They are quite a bit notchy, especially first and second and that takes getting used to, since my Baleno’s gears had become so butter smooth I could change them with one finger. No really, I mean it.

We went out for a long drive of around 130 kms yesterday to somewhere beyond the airport and back and boy, is this vehicle made for the highways or what! It just begs to move into fifth and jumps to 120 without the tacho going too much beyond 2000. Reasonably quiet too, no gruff roar, no rattles or squeaks. Just a deep throated VRRROOOOOM, if you catch my drift. With all the windows up, it is quiet inside too. We were eight people in the car (five adults + 3 kids in the last row) and there is absolutely no time at which the car feels underpowered. Of course, I haven’t tried anything like a Ooty level grade yet, but that will probably be soon. My in-laws were with me and they were very happy with the ride quality. “First class” says my father-in-law. My mother on the other hand felt that the Baleno’s ride quality was better. I told her “Sedans are always better in that department, but can it carry eight people like now?”. “Well, that is there”, she said. Moreover, the airport road is in a state of constant flux what with the long overhead toll way coming up, so that must be taken into account too.
Likes

Almost everything! Looks, presence, performance, capacity, space…

Zero turbo-lag. You press the pedal, you move forward as expected.

Zero shiver on the gear lever when you start or stop the engine. No wild horses prancing like in a Scorpio or a Xylo.

The high seating position. Takes some getting used to after 20+ years of road huggers.

Fuel efficiency for such a big engine. Shows me 13.4 after the 130 kms run.

Humongous fuel tank. 70 litres without a “top up”. Car Info showed well over 800 kms “distance to empty” after a full tank! Still early days, I guess.

The new audio system sounds spectacular at high volume, when you are alone in the car.

Dislikes

The plastic quality. Could have been much better, especially the buttons on the centre console.

That reflective centre console. Spoils the view out of the front, especially at around noon time.

Can't think of anything else, but it is too early for that I guess

On a side note
Whew, this one took nearly four hours to write! On a Monday, you ask? Well I just had my wisdom tooth surgically removed this morning and the doctor has ordered three days rest. No office, yay!! So I am kind of free at the moment. Hurts a lot, but it had to go.

My daughter came home from school just now and asked “Appa, how are you?” I said “I’m OK but it pains, Putti” (Putti means female little one in Kannada). She immediately hugs me and gives me a kiss (on the other cheek, I was careful) and says “You will be better now!” I ask you, which son would ever do this? I can just imagine my nephew going “Kiss my Dad??!!” with an unspoken “Dude, are you nuts?” in his eyes! Ah, daughters!

And finally...
All photos were taken with my iPhone 5 with some mild editing in Photoshop. I haven't had time or good sunlight to do a proper photo shoot, though I am planning one once the sun is out and will upload pictures once done.

Hey Guys! :D

Its wonderful to finally be a part of the Team BHP Family ! That too on first attempt (Have seen how difficult it is)
Its been two weeks since I have become a member, and I have been exploring all the sections of this community. A little overwhelmed at all the threads!
Finally now I am able to post a little introduction!

I am 24, from Bangalore, India and I landed up on Team BHP through Google!! Love cars. Always have. Don't feel the same passion for bikes.
I drive a Santro Xing GLS, and its been 3 years since I have been driving. (2 years actively)

I have always loved cars, but the curiosity never got me under the hood until now. After starting to drive myself however, I started learning more about them and there's been no turning back!

I am currently learning more about my car, its different parts, how to fix things, and one day I want to be able to tune my vehicle myself.
F.E, safety and reliability is very important to me and I want to be able to tinker around to improve it according to my requirement and maintain my vehicle well!

I am currently learning to improve my driving techniques. To be able to drive so smoothly that the occupants do not experience any inkling of a gear change, of fast acceleration, a sudden brake, to be transferred to another world where its just you and your vehicle! That's what I want to achieve! And yes, I'm working towards it.

My favourite cars (wish to own one day) have been the Aston Martin, Nissan GTR, Nissan 350Z, Mitsubishi Lancer EVO. The ferrari's and Lambo's somehow don't bring out the same thrill as the above list, except they really look good, handling and are monstrous!

So far, my favourite parts of this community have been "Technical Stuff" and "Team BHP Advice on owning a car". There's still so much to look forward to. Also have the mobile app now.

On the work front, I am a Software Engineer working in an IT company. Some of my interests are travelling, anime, music.
Looking forward to be a part of this family, and hear from you awesome guys! rl:

News Link Added

India's largest selling car, the Alto 800, is now available in an additional version as Maruti Suzuki has added the VXi trim to the small car's variant line up. The Alto 800, in VXi trim sits at the very top of the variant line up and is priced at 3.17 lakh rupees, ex-showroom Delhi. The VXi trim of the Alto 800 seems like a variant that has been readied up keeping car buyer feedback in mind.

Attachment 1098411

The features added to the Alto 800 through the VXi trim reflects this angle of thought as hitherto missing features such as central locking and a stereo player that supports the USB function, have been added. Team-BHP learns that Maruti Suzuki dealers across most Indian cities are taking bookings for the VXi variant of the car, with deliveries slated to begin shortly.

Here's a round up of the new features on the VXi model of the Alto 800,

Side moulding

Manual central locking

Factory fitted stereo system with USB support

Two front speakers

12 Volt Power Socket

Rear Roof Spoiler

Rear Parcel Tray

Internally adjustable left hand side wing mirror

The driver side airbag will be offered as an optional extra, as is the case with the petrol powered LXi model. The VXi trim for the Alto 800 is not available with the CNG-Petrol dual fuel model of the small car. Available in seven other trims, the VXi variant of the Alto 800 is priced about 13,500 rupees higher than the LXi model.

The Alto 800 features a reworked 796cc-3 cylinder petrol engine that outputs a peak power of 48 PS-69 Nm. The engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox as standard. The revised version of the F8D petrol engine is not just more powerful and torquey but is also more fuel efficient. The base version of the Alto 800 skips air conditioning and the power steering.
