I think by March this year, they will be launching the upgraded Aakash Tablet with capacitative touchscreen, 600/800mHz processor , android 2.3 and better battery which would be a major improvement in the user experience.
I read that the price would be around 2.9k for th upgraded one.

I prebooked the Ubislate in December and got a confirmation email with the order number.

Few hours later got another email mentioning the 'correct' order number.

Nothing after that. When can I expect to get it?

Tata Nano among tablets, expect Tata Nano quality. Only hope it doesn't catch fire. Don't rush to buy them and regret later.

Below is the mail I received on pre-booking:

"You can have a confirmed prioritized delivery of your Ubislate7+ in March if you decide to make an advanced payment by mailing a Cheque / Demand Draft for Rs.2999/-. This offer also promises free shipping for the tablet (normal shipping charges Rs.199/-)."

I booked it with `Nano' expectations and never thought of a `BMW' with Rs. 2999

Did you receive it immediately? I just have my pre-book number. No communication since then.

I'd suggest that you guys wait for the plus variant with the capacitive screen and better processor. with a 366 mhz processor and a resistive screen i'll only use this thing as an animated photoframe.

I am sure this is meant only for the less privileged who dont have access to Ipads and Galaxy Tabs and whatnot.

Agreed it must be of a lower standard of quality and reponsiveness and so on, but I think in one sense it is a first class step by our Govt. to bring the Tablet PC experience to the masses.

I wish they would look after quality though - some of the lucre siphoned off by the Netas and Babus could have been used to give a higher quality of product with a higher level of subsidy so as to make it accessible!

Dream on, I guess...

I read that there is another cheap tablet called Classpad is awaiting release which default has a capacitive touch screen.
from the specifications(if true), it looks interesting.

excerpt:
Quote:
Considered to be the developed version of the Aakash tablet, the Classpad boasts of features such as touch screen, better battery life, 1.3 Ghz processing speed and a built-in memory of 4 Gb, which can also be expandable to 8 Gb. The device is also equipped with artificial intelligence and is built on the Android platform.

Its developer, the Classteacher Learning Systems of which Pande is the CEO, plans to take the device to the market through two business routes, the Trolley model and 'one tablet per child' (OTPC) model.

In the Trolley model, the device can be used on a shared manner by paying Rs 100 per child, whereas in ‘one tablet per child' (OTPC) model, the parents have to pay for the device. It is available for students of Class 3 to 12th

The good news for the general public is that, the developer of the Classpad is planning to launch the tablet in 2012 for the general public, which they can buy online.

That is like a nano vs safari comparison.

The classpads are 14k per tablet.

Classpad – a new education tablet!
