Hi!
canon 350 D has CMOS sensor which is better than CCD sensor's in most digital camera's. iam not sure of nikon slr about CMOS or CCD but latest olympus digital slr is CCD only not cmos. we recenlty baught 350D in bangalore for 48K with 1 GB CF card. but the offer at JJmehta is 43K for 350D with 1GB CF + UV film + carry bag.

Caution. If anythings goes wrong with the camera after three months you are looking at a very very expensive repair bill. So dont invest so much without warranty. If you were in the US D50 would have been a great deal, but not in India.
Here with bill and warranty(1 year only) Nikon D50 costs 55000(kit lens).
But if you buy 350D with bill and warranty(2 years) + 1GB flash card, the cost is 45000rs and most dealers will give you a free camera bag. Dont buy from canon digicam zones, these are located in posh localities and wont come down even one rupee below 47500. however you can go to pritam studios in chandni chowk, or digicam zone in Palika bazaar. they will give you around 37K price without warranty and 45500-46000 price with warranty(2 years). You will also get a CF card 1GB. UV filters are cheap and MC filters(make sure you get a multicoated and not ordinary filter) for 300-500 each.
I bough my 350D from digicam zone. I would have saved 500rs if I had gone to chandni chowk.
also make sure you pay by cash as if you pay by credit card(both pritam and digicam zone accept cards) you will end up paying 2.5% extra. I paid part cash and part card.
You can PM me if you want any specific details.

I dropped 350D because it didn't have spot metering.

Here is a good comparision between D70s and 350D.

I also wanted the D50, but no warranty made me look away. But I am glad I did not. Reason, no mirror lockup. I have some 300mm(480mm equiv) shots on tripid at shutter speeds of 1/10s and so which come out hazy without mirror lockup.
As for compensating spot metering, at first my birds would come out dark when shot against the sky, but a 2 stop exposure compensation fixed that.
As for the comparisons, http://www.dpreview.com is the site I trust. BTW samurai, why dont you join us at http://paai.in? Some tbhpians there including rudra ji

I too trust them. It was there where I realised 350D images were superior to D70s and Olympus E500 images very close to 350D or D20.

Dude,
Try out Lumix (Panasonic) FZ20 or FZ30 before buying anything else. REcently I have purchased an FZ20 from China for my friend. The picture and Image stabilization is amazing. It got and option for manual focusing (using the focusing ring) too. FZ20 is ideal. But if you want the advantage of 8Mpixel check out FZ30. Its coming with the lense hood too. For FZ 20 I have spend 23K with 1GB extra SD card and one extra orginal panasonic Battery. All made in Japan.

i'm looking to buy a digital camera finally - film works out too expensive on holidays etc (I have a Nikon F55) apart from the other advantages of going digital (no going back and realising that you made a mess up of that gorgeous sunset.....)

Are there any decent digital SLR's under 25K ? I don't really want to spend 50-70k on a camera right now...

cheers

Not in India. In the US after rebates you can get a 350D body for 600$, a E-500 or a D-50 kit for around 600-630$.

this is a good read...
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=17875300

For under 25K ($600) I'd look at the following

Canon S80 - hot shoe with a 420EX/430EX or 540EX, 28mm wide
Kodak P880 - same as above...
see http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons80/page13.asp
and http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/kodakp880/page14.asp

OR

Kodak P850 hot shoe, 12x, IS
Panny FZ20/30 same as above
see http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pana...z30/page11.asp
and http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/kodakp850/page14.asp
note the Kodak is under $400 and hence can be a better value..but the FZ30 is being comapred the the Canon 350 SLR here
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pana...z30/page13.asp

or if you prefer Nikon the Nikon 7900
see http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikoncp7900/page8.asp

ALFA does not take credit cards. Also Digicam zone in Pallika bazaar will give you a better deal(Bargained from both in my case).
For the best deal(you may save around 2000rs) go to Pritam studios at chandni chowk. Its near moti cinema.
Make sure you get the 2 year warranty and the 1GB card which is with the deal.
Another caveat. If you pay by card you have to pay 2.5% extra, so going to a digicam zone may get you the same prices(GK II M Block market).
I paid part by cash and part by card.

Thanx TSK, your inputs have been very valuable. I intend to pay in cash; so I thing buying from pritam will get me a better deal. Currently I am buying only the 350D kit, with 18-55 kit lens and a tripod; no other lens or cleaning device right now.
P.S. I have been a sleepign member of paai.in for some time; hope to start contributing once I get my cam.

If you pay cash you will get the 350D + Kit lens + 1GB card = 45000rs. He will say 46000rs, but you have to bargain hard.
Make sure you get a UV filter as it will protect your lens and it costs about 300rs only. Get a lens cleaning solution and cloth(200rs or so) as its very important. Everytime I go outdoor shooting I have to clean the filter surface due to the high amount of dust we have here.
